Strategic Planning and Initiatives ManagerThe George Mason University, Office of Research, Innovation, and Economic Impact, invites applications for a Strategic Planning and Initiatives Manager. ORIEI serves as a central resource to support and enhance university research, creative activities, innovation, and entrepreneurship functions in cooperation with other campus units and external stakeholders. In doing so, ORIEI advances George Mason University's essential teaching, research, and public service missions. This administrative office is organized into three interdependent units.Research Services provides support for sponsored project development and execution. This unit also serves as the steward for research integrity and assurance, promoting and supporting the responsible conduct of research.Research and Innovation Initiatives leads initiatives to grow the research capacity through transdisciplinary collaboration. This unit also strategically engages the research community to understand and acquire - or partner for - research resources such as facilities and equipment. Finally, this unit partners with Faculty Affairs and Development and Graduate Education to provide educational and training opportunities related to research for faculty, post-doctoral scholars, and students.Mason Enterprise supports the development of strategic relationships with community and corporate partners to accelerate and amplify economic outcomes made possible by GMU research, scholarship, and creative work. This unit also manages Mason intellectual property, supports the growth of new ventures emerging out of the research enterprise, and develops and supports shared facilities for commercialization and small business support across the Commonwealth, and manages federal, state, and local grants connected to entrepreneurship and economic development.ORIEI engages a diverse community and fosters an inclusive environment for research, creative activities, innovation, and entrepreneurship focused on the discovery and application of knowledge towards regional, national, and global impact for all levels of society.About the Position:The purpose of this position is to advance and execute projects across a range of activities as assigned by the VPR, including background research, networking, convening meetings, and drafting communication. As a member of the leadership team, the incumbent will serve as an advisor to the VPR. The incumbent will be required to develop a deep understanding of the key issues on the VPR's agenda, including background, content, and implications.Responsibilities:The incumbent will take an active role in defining the actions, tasks, and events that need to be accomplished in order to advance the VPR and Mason's Research priorities.Strategic InitiativesLead cross-functional strategic initiatives, facilitate special projects, and ensure action items are executed on behalf of the VPR;Collaborate with Associate VPs and Directors to ensure accuracy, coordination, and prioritization of initiatives that serve our internal and external stakeholders;Participate with the VPR in goal setting and strategy development with Associate VPs in their specific areas of responsibility and partner with Associate VPs and Directors to achieve those goals; andConduct research on markets, networks, competition, etc., evaluate data, and prepare informal reports and feedback as needed on various topics such as new initiatives, special studies, or investigations that require analysis.Inclusive Excellence ImplementationLead the effort to cultivate and sustain collaboration of initiatives and programming related to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging;Work with Associate VPs and faculty leadership to support inclusive excellence; andLead implementation of the VPR's Inclusive Excellence Plan, monitor and report on progress.Relationship ManagementAssist in the management of relationships on behalf of the VPR;Liaise with the full scope of the VPR's contacts, internal (e.g., advancement, Deans, AVPs) and external (e.g., partners and sponsors), in order to move forward the VPR's agenda on behalf of the ORIEI; andConvene meetings and networking events as needed.Communications & MediaDraft communication on behalf of the VPR; provide back-up to the VPR on correspondence, including prioritizing items and ensuring timely responses;Ensure best exposure for the VPR and ORIEI, acting in concert with OCM; andAssist with the accurate and professional preparation of correspondence, white papers, presentations, and other materials.Assessment and AnalyticsEstablish expectations, goals, and objectives for implementation of VPR initiatives;Develop, with the VPR, Associate VPs, and directors, strategic plans for program evaluation and operations, fostering a data-informed culture that emphasizes transparency, solution-oriented thinking, continuous improvement, and institutional effectiveness; andCollaborate with the leadership team to analyze current operations, identify gaps in operations and implement improved practices.Required Qualifications:Master's degree with some (generally 2-3 years) project management experience or a Bachelor's degree with significant (generally 8-10 years) project management experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience;Ability to work independently as well as part of a team;Ability to handle confidential information with discretion and professionalism;Proven ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks accurately under pressure; andMust have demonstrated writing skills and ability to proofread and edit copy.Preferred Qualifications:Experience in higher education;Experience working in a high-volume, fast-paced office;Proficient computer skills with working knowledge of all applications in Microsoft Office, database expertise, and e-mail and network applications;Demonstrated organizational and prioritizing skills; andDemonstrated interpersonal, verbal, and written communications skills including the ability to work effectively with and relate well to staff and external constituents at all levels of the university.
