Job Description

The Washington Post is looking for a product editor to support the platforms that power our journalism, including our content management systems and planning tools. The ideal candidate will be a natural problem solver, critical thinker and meticulous organizer who can effectively define and improve The Post's workflows and systems for publishing and planning.

The product editor is responsible for the health and growth of editor-facing and audience-facing applications. This person will partner closely with product managers and newsroom stakeholders to find ways to optimize our workflows and tools, identifying opportunities to improve functionality and speed; working alongside product managers to prioritize the development and implementation of new features and drive adoption; and maintaining support structures, such as documentation and education, associated with our content management systems and vendor applications. Daily duties include but are not limited to training journalists; reviewing tool usage analytics; conducting product surveys and reviews; creating operation manuals for newsroom tools; shaping ideas for building best in class tools; and facilitating competitive analysis.

This position requires a flexible leader with strong communication and keen listening skills. The ability to prioritize and translate complex requests into clear requirements is critical. Top candidates will thrive on collaboration and have experience working cross-functionally across a large organization. The product editor is expected to work with newsroom, product, engineering, publishing tools and publishing support teams, as well as directly with editors and reporters.

Candidates should be comfortable with workflow and analysis tools such as Trello, Confluence, Whimsical and Google Analytics and be able to master in-house tools that play a critical role in The Post's global storytelling (Ellipsis, WebSked, Anglerfish, Methode, Lionfish). Mastering these applications and finding ways to improve them over time will be key. This role requires a proven track record of managing complex systems and workflows at scale; two to four years of product management experience is preferred. Day to day, the candidate will help define product objectives and communication strategy and review scope and track progress to serve journalists in our newsroom.

This position is based in our Washington newsroom and is not eligible for remote work. The Post strives to provide its readers with high-quality, trustworthy news and information while constantly innovating. That mission is best served by a diverse, multi-generational workforce with varied life experiences and perspectives. All cultures and backgrounds are welcomed.

Candidates should upload a résumé and cover letter that addresses your experience with managing systems at scale or why you're otherwise well-suited for this role to our jobs portal. All application materials can be uploaded to the same field. The cover letter should be addressed to Deputy Director of News Product Charity Brown. Internal candidates can apply here.
