Position Information

The Department of Parks and Recreatio n is seeking an enthusiastic Gymnastics Instructor to coach one to multiple levels in the boys/girls team program, including teaching recreational classes in the gym. This employee will also provide support and direction to athletes, plan practices, attend meets, and provide input to help shape the recreational and competitive teams' programs.

The Arlington County Gymnastics program has something for everyone. The program supports the competitive girls' team, the Arlington Aerials, a competitive boys' team, the Arlington Tigers, and robust recreational class programs. Our teams compete in 10 to 15 meets each season, and the class program offers over 250 classes yearly. The program is housed in the Barcroft Sports and Fitness Center, a 30,000-sf. facility that includes over 20,000 sf. of gymnastics equipment.

Specific Duties:

  • Coaching all levels of the boys or girls developmental and/or Xcel program s (pre-team/ Bronze through Level 10 /Diamond/ Sapphire) through positive coaching methods;
  • Developing and implementing a progressive gymnast training plan for recreational classes, pre-team /Bronze through Level 10/ Diamond/ Sapphire, including training in strength, flexibility, balance, endurance, and coordination;
  • Observing students during practice and competition to help determine the needs for individual or team improvement;
  • Teaching recreational classes and assisting with special events, open gyms, birthday parties and workshops;
  • Creating and following the appropriate curriculum or lesson plan(s) for the level or class being coached;
  • Maintaining an efficient practice rotation schedule to ensure athletes have a positive and empowering experience;
  • Attending required meetings and trainings, maintaining a clean and safe working environment, and performing periodic equipment safety checks;
  • Maintaining compliance with current COVID-19 protocols;
  • Establishing and maintaining professionalism while supervising students and coaches during practice and meets; and
  • Performing other duties as assigned.
The ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience teaching the development of skills and proper gymnastic techniques, the ability to motivate and effectively communicate with students, parents, and coworkers. Exercising mature judgment and sound decision-making, along with basic computer, Google Docs, and digital information management skills are essential.

Selection Criteria


  • High school diploma/GED;
  • 800 hours of technical experience in Gymnastics (may come from a variety of sources, such as work experiences, volunteer experiences or formal athletic participation); and
  • 50 hours of experience as an instructor.

Substitution: Additional education in a related field may be substituted for the experience requirement, with each year of post-high school education substituting for 400 hours of technical experience. However, additional education may not be substituted for the instructing hours requirement.

Desirable: Preference may be given to candidates with a Bachelor's degree or higher in related field, and/or experience with one or more of the following:

  • Gymnastics recreational instructor;
  • Compulsory and optional level coaching for both men's and women's gymnastics teams;
  • Working in a USA Gymnastics Member club setting; and/or
  • Using lift equipment and spotting children.

Special Requirements

A pre-hire background check will be made on all candidates who are selected for employment, which may include the following: criminal record, driving record, education, professional licensure, and credit history. You may be required to sign a release authorizing the County to obtain your background information.

Must obtain and/or maintain all required certifications including USA Gymnastics, CPR/AED, and Safe Sport.
