Duties

  • Provide highly specialized nursing skills to patients, including critically ill patients, consistently utilizing advanced critical care assessment skills to identify difficult patient care problems.
  • Administer medications necessary to provide moderate sedation for invasive procedures, including initiating IV therapy for patients.
  • Monitor and respond appropriately to patient?s physiological response and altered cardiac rhythms using Pediatric and Adult Advanced Life Support protocols, to include administering chest compression and CPR.
  • Respond to life-threatening changes in patient condition, to include providing immediate and appropriate emergency measures according to established protocols.
  • Coordinate care for procedural patients to include transfer and flow of patients between procedural and recovery areas, communicating patient progress and clinical status of patients as requested.
  • Monitor the procedural room for compliance to Joint Commission and infection control requirements.
  • Teach and mentor professional and paraprofessional nursing staff in the treatment of critical care for patients.
  • Assist with complex nursing and diagnostic procedures for critical ill patients.
  • Provide recovery services as requested to patients in other clinical areas during after-hours procedures.
  • Monitor and operate equipment used in the care of critically ill patients.
  • Provide procedural preparation and recovery to patients undergoing Interventional Radiology procedures such as angiograms, biopsies, fistulogram, embolization, drains, central line placement, and more

  • This position requires that you obtain and maintain a Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification.
  • This position requires the incumbent to work on a rotating shift schedule.
  • You must undergo a specific initial background checks, investigation and periodic re-verification check of multiple agency records to obtain and maintain a suitable determination to occupy a position having regular contact with children.
  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Tier 3 security investigation or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
  • This position requires the incumbent to have tuberculosis testing.
  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Male applicants born after December 31, 1959 must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration.
  • Two year trial/probationary period may be required.
  • This position has mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirements and is subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations unless otherwise exempted for medical or religious reasons (documentation of exemption must be provided upon hire).
  • This position is subject to a pre-employment drug screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • This position requires the incumbent to fulfill credentialing requirements and obtain and maintain appropriate/relevant clinical privileges.
  • This position may require the incumbent to work on any day or shift, including PMs, nights, weekends, holidays, or on an "on call" basis, necessary to meet mission requirements.
  • This position has been designated Mission Essential. In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations, the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
  • This position requires that you obtain and maintain a Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • This position requires that you obtain and maintain an Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education, license, and experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Basic Requirement for Nurse (Clinical/Critical Care):

Degree: A graduate or higher level degree, bachelor's degree, associate degree, or diploma from an accredited professional nursing educational program is required. This education must have been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs, Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.).

Licensure: A current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States; and you must have passed the National Council Licensure Examination. (Note: You must attach a copy of your license.)

Foreign Degree: A degree from a Foreign Nursing School. Official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools is required for individuals who graduated from foreign nursing schools. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts and/or Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools certification.)

Exemption: You are exempt from the basic requirements above if you are a current federal employee occupying a position in the 0610 occupational series and have been continuously employed in this occupational series since September 27, 2017 or before. Applicants claiming this exemption must meet the requirement below. Note: You will be required to provide appropriate documentation to the respective Human Resources Office to validate your status.

Degree or diploma from a professional nursing program approved by the legally designated State accrediting agency at the time the program was completed by the applicant.

Active, current registration as a professional nurse in a State, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.

In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:

Professional Nursing Experience: One or more full years of professional nursing experience which includes performing moderate sedation for critical care patients; assisting with the recovery of patients from anesthesia; developing plans of care for critically ill patients; and operating sophisticated equipment used in the care of critically ill patients such as mechanical ventilators, intra-aortic monitoring, and hemodynamic monitoring equipment. This definition of professional nursing experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11).

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.

Certifications that are preferred but not required include Certified Emergency Nurse (CEN) and Trauma Nurse Critical Care (TNCC)

Education
