Small Business Bank - Special Assets Group Team Lead

Summary:

This position is primarily responsible for leading and overseeing the overall Small Business Lending Special Assets function. This individual will coach and lead a team of experienced special assets servicing officers for a portfolio of problem Small Business loans and deposit relationships. The team is primarily responsible for managing troubled assets with the goal of minimizing risk and loss and maximizing the performance of the Small Business Lending portfolio. The portfolio consists of both conventional and SBA Lending facilities.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Assists the team in evaluating customer relationships to determine a Relationship Retention Plan and identifies opportunities to restructure and cross sell Bank products to maintain customer relationships where appropriate.
  • Coaches towards collections strategies that are both effective and balance reputational risk of the Bank.
  • Ensures the team's processes and procedures are documented and implemented in a well managed way
    • Re-imagine key business routines, processes and controls considering policy requirements, portfolio characteristics and effective governance needs. The Team Leader will need to have a demonstrated track record of developing effective processes and controls.
  • Manages the work product of the team and has loan authority as designed by bank management; Coach individual contributors regarding core competencies and SAG portfolio management / workout strategy including determining whether an exit or retention strategy is appropriate and develops an action plan to achieve said strategy:
  • Evaluating relationships to determine whether an exit strategy or retention strategy is appropriate and develops action plans to achieve the most appropriate strategy.
  • Consulting with internal and external legal counsel regarding perfection of collateral and coordinating the necessary legal actions and strategies to protect the Bank's position.
  • Developing aggressive and comprehensive workout strategies to ensure optimal loss protection to the Bank in terms of both time and money while maintaining compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Evaluating financial information, collateral, legal documentation and other available information to project probable and maximum loss exposure to the Bank.
  • Negotiating loan and collateral documentation with third party counsel in conjunction with Lending Law.
  • Analyzing third party legal documents and negotiates potential arrangements to determine an overall strategy to reduce the Bank's loss exposure.
  • Assisting the Small Business Lending and Sales teams as a consultant on loans with deteriorating trends that have not yet been risk rated as a criticized asset.
  • Independently develops and implements a cadence of portfolio reporting to SAG and Credit Risk leadership at least quarterly, including recommendations regarding proper risk ratings, impairments, losses and WAC reporting through core processes including but not limited to the following:
    • Quarterly Impairment of Non Accrual Assets > $1MM
    • Quarterly Troubled Debt Restructure (TDR) Review of loans rated Substandard or worse
    • Quarterly WAC reporting
    • Quarterly Charge off Of Real Estate loans < $1MM
  • Expanded responsibilities as a member of the SBL leadership team
    • Partners with the Small Business Lending leadership team to ensure high rigor in the end to end loan process, including review of underwriting policy and portfolio management in a way that our business goals and risk management needs are met.
  • The Team Leader will serve as the primary connection point with Third Line Partners regarding continued collection efforts of charged off loans, including potential loan sales.
  • Coordinates with internal and external partners and advisors regarding potential loan sales and asset disposition.
  • Maintains close control and accounting of expenditures as a vital component of departmental goal to limit loan losses and maximize loan recoveries.


Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree
  • At least 3 years of commercial lending experience
  • At least 2 years of experience in one of the following: Small Business Underwriting OR Commercial Underwriting OR Credit Risk Management OR Loan Workout experience


Preferred Qualifications:
  • 4+ years of small business or commercial underwriting experience
  • 4+ years of credit risk management experience
