Arlington County is a dynamic and growing urban community with a popular, in-demand aquatics program. The Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) is seeking an experienced Lead Aquatics Instructor who shares our passion and can contribute in a fast paced, high performing unit within the Athletic and Facilities Services Division. We are looking for a reliable, enthusiastic, and positive instructor who can work with children and adults of all ages. There are over 10,000 annual participants in the year-round Aquatics Programs including; Learn to Swim, water aerobics, diving and private swim lessons. The program is designed to meet the popular and growing needs of the community for water safety education, learning to swim, as well as other aquatic sports.

This Lead Aquatics Instructor is part of a team that plan, develop, and implement aquatic programs across the County for over 11,000 participants annually. Lead Aquatics Instructors are responsible for the activities at the Long Bridge pools. The aquatics program provides Red Cross Learn to swim programs, aqua fitness, and diving, and works closely with the County sponsored swim team.

Specific Duties Include:

  • Providing management and suggested improvements for aquatic programs;
  • Coordinating and training a team of Aquatic Instructors, including providing leadership for assigned programs;
  • Training, coaching and mentoring new and existing instructors;
  • Planning and preparing for seasonal/quarterly aquatic programs;
  • Creating resources for staff and program participant education;
  • Collaborating with a team of aquatic leaders; and
  • Performing administrative support duties.

In 2021 Arlington County opened the Long Bridge Park Aquatic and Fitness Center located in Crystal City, which contributes to the success of the aquatics program in Arlington. Selection Criteria

Minimum Requirements:

  • High school diploma, GED or the equivalent; and
  • 1200 hours of technical experience in aquatics, of which at least 50 hours must be as an instructor.
Substitution: Additional education in a related field may be substituted for the experience requirement, with each year of post-high school education substituting for 400 hours of technical experience. However, additional education may not be substituted for the instructing hours requirement.

Desirable: Preference may be given to candidates with experience in one or more of the following:

  • Working with an American Red Cross or other Learn to Swim or aquatics program;
  • Swimming instruction through coaching or teaching;
  • Working with children and adults of all ages and skill levels;
  • Developing aquatics programs; and/or
  • Working with Rec-Trac or other recreation tracking software.
Possession of one or more of the following Certifications preferred:

  • American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Certification;
  • Water Exercise Certification;
  • First Aid and CPR Certification; and
  • Other Aquatics Certifications.

Special Requirements

American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certification is required or ability to obtain within 6 months of employment.

The applicant must possess, or obtain by the time of appointment, a valid drive license, or applicant must have the ability to use alternative methods of transportation to perform assigned duties at locations other than the primary worksite. If the applicant possesses a license, the applicant must authorize Arlington County to obtain or the applicant must provide a copy of the applicant's official state/district driving record. Any offer of employment may be contingent upon a favorable review of the applicant's driving record.

A pre-hire background check will be made on all candidates who qualify for this position. It may include checks of the following: criminal record, driving record, education, professional licensure and credit history. You will be required to sign a release authorizing the County to obtain your background information.
