Senior Director Machine Learning Engineering -Feature Platform (Remote Eligible)

The Senior Director of Feature Platform will be responsible for developing and deploying platforms and capabilities in support of feature engineering and data infrastructure across the entire ML/AI ecosystem at Capital One. You will partner closely with product, engineering, design, data science, enterprise data, cyber and cloud infrastructure teams, as well as line-of-business teams to develop world-class features at Capital One.

You'll provide technical leadership to Agile teams dedicated to productionizing machine learning applications and systems at scale. You'll participate in the detailed technical design, development, and implementation of machine learning applications using existing and emerging technology platforms. Working within an Agile environment, you'll serve as a technical domain expert for the feature platform and guide architectural design decisions, develop and review model and application code, and ensure high availability and performance of the platform.

You'll have the opportunity to continuously learn and apply the latest innovations and best practices in machine learning engineering. You'll further develop your technical knowledge and skills to keep Capital One at the cutting edge of technologyYou will lead, manage and grow multiple teams of software, machine learning, and data engineers.

This leader must have the ability to attract, recruit, and lead the industry's best talent, and simultaneously have the technical chops to ensure that we build compelling, customer oriented solutions in a cross functional environment..

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver feature engineering and platform capabilities that solve challenging business problems in the financial services industry, working in collaboration with the Product, Design, Engineering, and Data Science teams


  • Build and lead a world-class team of engineers to deliver platforms and capabilities for feature engineering, enabling machine learning across the entire company.


  • Develop and implement engineering best practices, technical architecture and standards for real-time, batch and streaming feature calculation, storage and serving at scale across the company.


  • Forecast and plan engineering capacity in line with machine learning use cases and teams onboarding into our platforms.


  • Plan and develop capabilities such as tools and SDKs for accessing datasets and production data pipelines on behalf of our users, applied researchers and ML use cases across the company, partnering closely with appropriate ML and data teams across the company, in compliance with our enterprise data privacy and security standards.

Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • At least 10 years of experience designing and building data-intensive solutions using distributed computing.
  • At least 6 years of experience programming with Python, Scala, or Java.
  • At least 5 years of people management experience.
  • At least 5 years of experience in leading software engineering teams.
  • At least 4 years of experience with the full ML development lifecycle using modern technology in a business critical setting.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's or doctoral degree in computer science, electrical engineering, mathematics, or a similar field.
  • 3+ years of experience building production-ready data pipelines that feed ML models.
  • 8+ years of experience within a large/data-intensive multi-line business environment.
  • Expertise designing, implementing, and scaling complex production-ready data pipelines for ML models.
  • Experience partnering with technology peers responsible for data architecture and distributed computing infrastructure/platforms
  • Ability to communicate complex technical concepts clearly to a variety of audiences.
  • Highly developed interpersonal, presentation, and communications skills.
  • ML industry impact through conference presentations, papers, blog posts, open source contributions, or patents.
  • Ability to attract and develop high-performing software engineers with an inspiring leadership style.
