Duties

• You will test feedwater for hardness and collect water samples.
• You will record temperatures, pressures, flows, levels, and other data as required.
• You will open and close valves (steam, water, oil, natural gas) as directed.

• You will be required to obtain and maintain a current motor vehicle operator's license and must be capable of obtaining a forklift operator's license within six months from date of employment.

The Screen-out Element for this position is: Ability to do the work of a BOILER PLANT OPERATOR HELPER without more than normal supervision as demonstrated by: 1) Following safety requirements and practices related to working in a high-pressure steam plant; 2) Assisting with heating and powering boiler plant equipment; 3) Documenting readings/information from boiler equipment; and 4) Assisting in starting, stopping, and operations monitoring of boilers and equipment. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Incumbent must be physically fit to lift and carry a maximum weight of 40 pounds a distance of 100 feet that includes lifting valves and salt bags. At frequent intervals, heavy exertion is required when lifting heavy pieces of equipment, pulling on wrenches, or driving a maul. Work requires constant standing, kneeling, crouching, stooping, climbing ladders, working in strained or awkward positions, leaning in forward positions, and performing with agility. Must have keen hearing in both ears, normal vision, and the ability to distinguish colors, namely red, white, blue, amber, yellow, purple, and orange. Full use of arms, legs, feet, and fine versatility in finger and hand movements necessary in the application and use of precision instruments. Physically fit to work continuously in areas with intermittent pollutants such as toxic fumes, boiler gases, dust smoke, and chemical reactants used in boiler water treatment.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Hazards encountered in this rating are not unusual, except for furnace explosions, which happen occasionally due to nature of fuel being burned. However, employee could be injured by falling or by bumping into overhead pipes or beams while performing work. There is danger of cuts, burns, broken bones, and/or bruises. Power and heating boiler plants may contain asbestos insulation and lead paint. Job site working environment involves exposure to hazardous equipment, sharp edges, and high-pressure boilers, valves, and piping. Is exposed to potential toxic fumes, boiler gasses, and chemical agents used for boiler water and steam treatment. The hazards are always present and are part of normal working conditions associated with steam production operations. Works indoors 80% of the time and outdoors 20% of the time. Work involves uncomfortable conditions such as excessive heat, dry atmospheric conditions, constant machinery, noise , dust, dirt, and soot. There is some danger of entanglement in moving machinery. There is also some danger involved when climbing ladders and working outside in cold weather and icy conditions.

Incumbent will be required to receive confined space training prior to assuming duties that require entry into a confined space. Incumbent is required to work as a Confined Space Safety Attendant.

If selected below the full performance level, you may be noncompetitively promoted to the next higher grade level after meeting all regulatory requirements, and upon the recommendation of management. Promotion is neither implied nor guaranteed.

A 40 hour work week is typical for this position.

All work is recurring and schedules rotate on a periodic basis. The incumbent must be able to work overtime as required.

This position is subject to work an uncommon tour, including nights, weekends, and holidays to meet mission requirements. Overtime or night differential pay and/or unusual duty hours may be required.

A relocation incentive is generally a single payment intended to offset some of the relocation costs experienced by the selectee. A relocation incentive may be authorized.
