Duties

VA Nursing Practice provides Veteran healthcare across a continuum of services for acute and chronic conditions in hospital, ambulatory, and skilled nursing settings. To improve Veteran access to care, nurses help create new models of care like the Primary Care Patient Aligned Care Teams (VA's Patient Centered Medical Home), introduce new nursing roles like the Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL), and advance existing roles, like the use of RN Care Managers to coordinate care. VA Nurses share lessons learned, tools, and evidence-based practices across the system. They engage in emergency management and disaster preparedness both in VA and beyond. And VA Nurses are integrally involved in the greater federal, national, and international communities of nursing: advocating for informed nursing practice so we can constantly improve nursing care for our nation's heroes with our nursing colleagues. Registered Nurses will be assigned to interested units throughout facility. The Registered Nurse practices in a complex patient care setting in collaboration with interdisciplinary colleagues and the department nurse/unit manager.   • Emergency Department -plays an important role in providing prompt and effective clinical care
  • Spinal Cord Injury- treatment and rehabilitation focuses on aggressively working physically and psychologically
  • Float Pool- exposure to multiple nursing modalities and areas
The primary responsibilities of RN may vary by assignment. Duties may include but are not limited to:
  • Provide population specific and age-specific care for patients from young adulthood to older veterans/groups in the senior years of life.
  • Manage a defined but dynamic caseload of patients in collaboration with an interdisciplinary healthcare team.
  • Initiate, plan, implement, evaluate, and appropriately document patient care based on identified measurable outcomes in the applicable assigned patient care environment.
  • Anticipate and respond appropriately to emergencies, coordinate interventions, and evaluate responses through critical analysis of patient systems/operational situations.
  • Initiate and lead individuals or groups through the educational process to optimize health. Monitor and document all applicable clinical reminders and performance measure outcomes timely and appropriately.
  • Use Computerized Patient Record System (CPRS) and Bar Code Medication Administration (BCMA) documentation in compliance with designated facility programs.
  • Implement the National Patient Safety Goals to support positive outcomes for the patient group.
  • May provide direct supervision and be assigned as a preceptor to new or less experienced staff or nursing students.

Pay: salary range listed in announcement is Base-Line Salary for full-time work. Actual salary set based on locality (which may include special pay rate depending upon location), as well as Full Time, Part Time or Intermittent employment.

Qualifications

United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
English Language Proficiency: No person will be appointed under authority of 38 U.S.C. chapter 73 or 74, to serve in a direct patient-care capacity in VHA who is not proficient in written and spoken English.
Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing ( ACEN ) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education ( CCNE ). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:
Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience.
Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience.

BLS/ACLS Requirements: Current certification in Basis Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) is required for all staff providing direct patient care and working in PCU. If you are selected, you will be required to have proof of certification prior to being boarded for appointment with VA or obtain such certification in order to avoid any delays in the hiring process.

Physical Requirements: See VA Directive and Handbook 5019 . This position requires potentially long periods of continued walking, standing, and sitting, lifting, carrying, pushing, reaching above shoulder, use of fingers, both hands, both legs and repeated bending. Must complete annual Employee Health requirements, such as annual TB screening or testing, as a condition of employment.

Work Environment: Work is performed primarily in a patient care setting; adequately lighted, temperature controlled, and ventilated. Office temperatures fluctuate periodically; involves everyday risks or discomforts which require normal safety precautions typical of such places as clinics, offices, meeting and training rooms or libraries; exposure to noise and dust on occasion. The work area is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations or operative/invasive procedures.
