Position Information

The Department of Parks & Recreation (DPR) is seeking an experienced Therapeutic Recreation (TR) Programmer to supervise community recreation programs for individuals of all ages, with disabilities to provide the overall adapted programs and inclusion services continuity and consistency within the TR section. This position will also provide direct and indirect supervision of staff.

The adapted program oversight may include social clubs, summer day camps, special events, family programming and adapted classes may include wellness, fitness, art, outdoor recreation, aquatics, gymnastics, etc. The inclusion services oversight will provide coordination and training to both internal DPR programs and contractors as needed. This position requires significant interdisciplinary collaboration and teamwork within the unit, division, and department as well as other county agencies.

Specific duties:

  • Supervising, hiring, training, scheduling, and providing performance appraisals of staff;
  • Managing, coordinating, and implementing a comprehensive program plan for therapeutic recreation services to include inclusion services and recruitment of vendors and program staff to offer various adapted offerings and establish standard operating procedures, manuals, and processes to deliver those services;
  • Evaluating customer service data collection, leisure needs assessments, trends, life cycle of programs, performance measures and outcomes;
  • Monitoring the effectiveness of therapeutic recreation interventions and making changes based upon evaluation findings for programs and participants;
  • Managing program budget, purchasing, and equipment and supply inventories;
  • Procuring and executing contracts for services that include sign language and CART;
  • Assisting recreation staff in the implementation of program modifications to ensure accessibility and participation for all individuals with disabilities;
  • Maintaining a high level of internal and external customer service; and
  • Designing and distributing marketing materials using social media platforms, websites, and software (examples: GovDelivery, Microsoft Publisher, PowerPoint, Adobe Acrobat).
The successful candidate will have extensive knowledge of the Americans with Disability Act (ADA) and accessibility issues and will be experienced in therapeutic recreation program planning by providing technical expertise and training to staff.

Selection Criteria

Minimum:

  • Bachelor's degree in Therapeutic Recreation, Recreation, Special Education, Adapted Physical Education, or a related field;
  • Two (2) years of experience in recreation programs and activities;
  • One (1) year of experience managing recreational activities for participants with disabilities; and
  • Possession of National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC) at time of hire.

Substitution: A master's degree in the specialty area may be substituted for one year of the experience requirement.

Desirables: Preference may be given to candidates with experience/designations in one or more of the following:

  • Supervising the work of others;
  • Working in a community recreation setting; and/or
  • Medication Administration Training-Diabetes (MAT-D) certification.

Special Requirements

This selected employee will be required to:

  • Complete MAT- Medication Administration Training (provided by employer) within one (1) month of employment ; and
  • Obtain CPR, First Aid and AED Certifications within six (6) months of employment.

A pre-employment criminal records check will be conducted. It may include checks of the following: criminal record, driving record, education, professional licensure, and credit history. You may be required to sign a release authorizing the County to obtain your background information.

Possession of, or ability to obtain by the time of appointment, a valid driver license, or the applicant must have the ability to use alternative methods of transportation to perform assigned duties at locations other than the primary worksite. If the applicant has a license, they must authorize Arlington County to obtain, or must provide, a copy of their official driving record.
