Position Information

The Arlington Economic Developmen t (AED), Division of Cultural Affairs is seeking a Public Art Project Manager to implement public art and design enhancements for infrastructure projects by providing project management, leadership, expertise, and guidance to the County and other agencies in support of the County's Public Art Master Plan and Public Art Policy goals.

This Public Art Manager will report to the Public Art Administrator and support communication and project activities to publicize, advocate for, and elevate the profile of public art and design enhancements in the County. The Manager will also oversee Arlington's collection of permanent public art and portable works, the database and website, and support the work of the Public Art Committee of the Arlington Commission of the Arts.

Specific duties:

  • Conducting frequent monitoring of County collection of public artworks owned by the County, private developers and others and coordinating conservation, maintenance, and repair of County-owned works;
  • Developing audience engagement programs and temporary projects that interpret and activate the County collection of public artworks;
  • Developing and managing County-initiated public art projects and serving in an advisory capacity for public art and design enhancement requests from the County at large, including education of County staff, residents and project stakeholders regarding the purpose and process of implementing public art projects and design enhancements in County-funded, Community-initiated, and private development projects;
  • Coordinating planning for meetings, selecting panels, presentations, and dedication ceremonies; including working with professional photographers to document completed projects;
  • Facilitating staff and Public Art Committee review of public art contributions to fulfill site plan conditions;
  • Coordinating correspondence, preparing presentations and other materials, and taking notes at Public Art Committee meetings;
  • Managing the public art communications needs and updating public art website; and
  • Performing other duties as assigned.

Selection Criteria

Minimum:

  • Bachelor's degree in Art or a Design discipline (e.g., Fine Arts, Art History, Arts Administration, Landscape Architecture, Urban Planning/Design); and
  • Considerable experience in arts administration, public art, or design-related discipline.
Substitution: Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the education requirement on a year-for-year basis.

Desirable: Preference may be given to those with a Master's Degree in related field or experience one or more of the following:

  • Art Design enhancements;
  • Developing and managing public art projects; and
  • Managing collections of public artworks.
