Position Information

The Department of Parks & Recreation (DPR) is seeking a Head Lifeguard for the Long Bridge Aquatics & Fitness Center to be responsible for the management and operations of all pools and water attractions in the center. This position will serve as the AM and PM supervisor of the lifeguard staff, and will hire, train, and manage all lifeguards including permanent, part-time, and temporary staff. The Head Lifeguard will be responsible for ensuring the safety of all aquatic participants, while also creating and implementing a water safety program for the facility. This position may act as a stand-in lifeguard or serve an administrative role during their shift.

The Long Bridge Aquatics & Fitness Center has something for everyone! A 50-Meter FINA compliant pool, a Leisure Pool with in-water volleyball & basketball, and a lazy river, along with a fitness studio, three community rooms, and two wet-classrooms for fitness classes, parties, and gatherings. Specific Duties:


  • Observes and enforces pool rules and water safety policies among lifeguards and aquatic participants while maintaining safe water quality (pool chemical checks) and assuring safety among the pool deck;
  • Hires, onboards, trains (In-Services), schedules, and manages Lifeguard staff, including completing timecards, employee evaluations, and annual reviews;
  • Collaborates with the Aquatics Program Manager and General Manager for aquatic program planning and staffing needs in the facility;
  • Manages the life-saving equipment/materials and assists the Maintenance technician in the pump rooms for the 50-Meter and Leisure Pools;
  • Serves as an on-deck lifeguard to cover shifts or works a regularly scheduled on-deck shift;
  • Provides emergency care and treatment;
  • Develops daily/weekly/monthly cleaning plans for pool decks to ensure they are clean and prepared for patrons;
  • Completes incident/accident reports, water emergency reports, roll up reports of weekly shift logs, water chemistry logs, and daily, weekly, and monthly safety reports;
  • Serves as Person in Charge (PIC) when required for the facility per the Arlington County Code Water Recreation Facilities Ordinance; and
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Selection Criteria

Minimum:


  • High School Diploma/GED;
  • Considerable experience working as a lifeguard;
  • Possession of American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification at time of hire; and
  • Possession of CPR/AED Certification at time of hire.
Substitution: Additional directly related experience can substitute for the education requirement on a year-for-year basis.

Desirable: Preference may be given to those with one or more of the following:

  • Knowledge of lifeguarding and best practices related to pool safety;
  • 5 years as a lifeguard in a recreational or competitive pool setting with many programs; and
  • 3 years of management or scheduling of a large diverse staff.
Possession of one or more of the following Certifications/Designations preferred:

  • Lifeguarding for the Professional Rescuer;
  • American Red Cross Water Attraction Credential for Lifeguards;
  • Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO); and
  • Certified Pool Operator (CPO).

Special Requirements

Must possess the American Red Cross Lifeguard and CPR/AED Certifications at time of hire.
