Job summary
The Washington Post is hiring a Software Engineer for our publishing tools team. We equip the reporters and editors in our newsroom with cutting edge tools to help them create and manage their content. We deliver that content to our readers through integrations with The Post's website, including our custom audio and video players.

Our ideal candidate is fearless with their ideas and communicates thoughtfully and compassionately. This team is looking for engineers who are motivated to learn new technologies and expand their skills.

Our engineering team is based at The Post's Washington, D.C. headquarters, but we are open to remote team members anywhere in the United States.

Responsibilities
  • Support the work of other engineers on the team through technical discussions and code review
  • Work with other engineering teams to integrate media content across The Post's publishing landscape
  • Contribute to the reliability and maintenance of our core infrastructure as part of an on-call rotation
  • Collaborate with Product and Design teams to build the best experience for both our newsroom users and our readers
  • Support the Post's business interests by integrating advertising technology in our audio and video players
Qualifications
  • 2 or more years of experience working as a software engineer, preferably in a full-stack environment
  • Familiarity with JavaScript frameworks, such as React and AngularJS
  • An understanding of modern web technologies and building for desktop and mobile browsers
  • Some exposure to building back-end services and REST APIs using technologies like Node.js or Java
Optional qualifications
  • 2 or more years of experience in agile software development teams working iteratively with designers, product managers and stakeholders
  • 1 or more years of experience building web applications on Amazon Web Services (AWS)
  • Prior work with DevOps technologies like Docker, GitHub Actions, AWS CodeBuild and other AWS services
  • 1 or more years of experience with end-to-end testing frameworks
  • 1 or more years of experience incorporating analytics instrumentation and enabling A/B testing
  • Familiarity with modern build systems like Maven and Webpack
