Job Description

The Washington Post is seeking a deputy visual enterprise editor to join National with the mission of conceiving and executing high-impact visual and immersive storytelling.

This editor, who will report to the National visual enterprise editor, will oversee quick-turn coverage and projects that seek to convey information in visually compelling and innovative ways, such as reimagining how to capture a bill signing or political rally . Other pieces might bring a human dimension to news events, offer an innovative take on a complex development, or quickly convey the enormity of social change . The goal of this position is to elevate our coverage and to help attract new audiences through visual-first stories that integrate photographs, video, graphics, audio and design.

This editor will work closely with reporters and editors in National to identify story targets while also serving as a key player in executing plans across the newsroom. The deputy editor will partner with the National visual enterprise editor in building a workflow to help execute the department's visual-first priorities and will take the lead on mobilizing resources on quick-turnaround stories and in breaking news situations. In addition, the deputy will serve as a coach for editors across the department on how to help identify stories with the greatest potential for visual-first journalism and how to make the most of different platforms.

This role is intended for a highly accomplished, collaborative visual journalist with a record of success working across disciplines to execute memorable multimedia journalism. Excellent editorial and visual judgment are essential; competitive zeal is key, as is a high metabolism and a passion for breaking news. Candidates should have a strong background in visual reporting, with deep experience in video, photo, graphics or design. Someone with a talent for editing text for visual impact is preferred.

This position, which is part of a major expansion of The Post's editing ranks, is based in our Washington newsroom. Once we resume normal operations, it will not be eligible for remote work.

The Post strives to provide its readers with high-quality, trustworthy news and information while constantly innovating. That mission is best served by a diverse, multi-generational workforce with varied life experiences and perspectives. All cultures and backgrounds are welcomed.

Candidates should upload a résumé, cover letter and three examples of outstanding, integrated multimedia work to our jobs portal by 05/27/2022. All application materials can be uploaded to the same field. The cover letter should be addressed to National Editor Matea Gold and Senior Editor for Visual Enterprise Ann Gerhart.
