Engineer - Network Monitoring Administrator/Supervisor

The University of Maryland Network Operations Center (NOC) is responsible for monitoring and managing the network. This position is necessary to monitor, detect, analyze, trouble-shoot and assist in resolving network outages. This position will provide overall support for the University’s Network Management System (NMS), CA Spectrum and Performance Center. In addition, the position will support additional monitoring tools used by the NOC. (Pingdom, APC’s Data Center Expert, Passler’s Router Traffic Grapher (PRTG) and Infoblox’s NetMRI among others. This position will be the lead Network Monitoring tool developer and maintain the suite of tools that the campus Network Operations Center (NOC) uses to support the network infrastructure.

This is a globally accessible, high availability, fast paced and business critical 24×7 environment. Supervision of student technicians and programmers assigned to the NOC.

Minimum qualifications

EDUCATION
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in an IT related field of study.
EXPERIENCE

  • At least five years of experience with a technical organization in the capacity of network administration and two years of experience working with and administering network monitoring tools.
  • Experience with scripting and programming skills to enhance the value and utility of network application and tools.
  • Must have experience with enterprise management tools such as Tivoli, HP-OpenView, Solarwinds, etc.
  • Should have experience with network routers and switches.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Must have familiarity with fundamental network monitoring.
  • Must have the ability to maintain network monitoring applications and tools.
  • Must have the ability to guide and train the team on CA Spectrum and Performance Center administration.
  • Must have the ability to write scripts in some administrative language (Perl, Python).
  • Should be comfortable with most aspects of monitoring tool administration, for example, configuration and implementing alerts for all the required hardware and software components.
  • The ideal candidate must be detail oriented, have good oral and written communication skills, good organization and problem solving skills and the ability to interact effectively with all levels of the campus, from technical to executive management.
  • This candidate should also have the ability to work in a fast-paced, open team environment and be results focused, flexible and adaptable.

Preferences 

Network operations experience.

Familiarity with some or all of the following: switched Ethernet, LAN switches , network routers, DHCP & DNS, VPN,wireless Controllers and Access Points, firewalls, VoIP, Packet shapers, WAN technologies, remote troubleshooting, network protocols, network diagnostic tools, and the OSI model.

Additional certifications: IT or network management related certifications is a plus.

Additional information: This position does not provide sponsorship for Visas.
Salary range:  $108,000 – $112,000.

Physical demands: Sedentary work. Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Repetitive motion. Substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers. The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading.
