General Statement of Job Under general supervision, performs specialized skilled work in the operation of one or more types of motorized heavy equipment used in the composting process for the Utilities/Public Works Department. Work involves operating such heavy equipment as tractors, loaders, trommel screens, grinders, dump trucks and road tractors to create and distribute Livingston's Blend Compost. Employee is responsible for operating equipment with considerable skill, precision and constant attention to safety of operation in order to prevent accidents. Employee is also responsible for performing minor preventive maintenance on equipment. Employee must exercise some independent judgment in the performance of assigned tasks. This position is essential. Personnel occupying this position may be scheduled to work irrespective of weather conditions and/or when general County offices are closed. Special Duties & Responsibilities * Operates one or more types of motorized heavy equipment involved in the production and distribution of compost with limited supervision, such as: tractors, loaders, trommel screens, grinders, off road trucks, dump trucks, front end loaders, fork lifts, etc. * Performs preventative maintenance and related care of trucks and equipment, making minor repairs, as needed with limited supervision. * Fuels and cleans trucks and equipment. * Cuts grass, polices the facilities grounds and picks up litter and debris. * Removes snow from the compost facility to include roads, sidewalks and parking lots. * Transports equipment from site to site as needed. * Hauls stone, mulch and performs compost deliveries as needed. * Interacts with commercial and residential customers to process and load compost orders. * Performs other related duties as required. Minimum Training & Experience High School Diploma or equivalent and three (3) to five (5) years of experience in operating heavy equipment; experience in the operation of heavy motorized equipment; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities. Must have a valid Class B Virginia Commercial Driver's License or obtain within six (6) months of date of hire. Participation in County sponsored safety training to include First Aid and CPR/AED Certification. Attendance of OSHA required annual training is a condition of continued employment. Must conform to OSHA regulations that may require removal of some facial hair and obtain a baseline hearing test. Maintaining certification and licensing is a condition of continued employment. Special Requirements * Knowledge of the operation of motorized heavy equipment used in composting operations. * Knowledge of the occupational hazards and the proper safety precautions involved in operating heavy motorized equipment. * Skill in the use and operation of a variety of heavy equipment. * Ability to perform maintenance on heavy motorized equipment. * Ability to follow oral instructions. * Ability to work effectively in an unpleasant working environment. * Ability to exercise tact and courtesy when in contact with the general public. * Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments. * Ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable, functional, structural or compositional characteristics (whether similar or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people or things. * Ability to speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information. Includes receiving instructions, assignments or directions from superiors. * Ability to prepare equipment service records. * Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagrammatic form; to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in or from standardized forms. * Ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to follow oral and written instructions. Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently in standard English. * Ability to utilize mathematical formulas; to add and subtract. * Ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under minimal levels of stress. * Ability to communicate respectfully and professionally.
