Job Description

The Washington Post has an opening on its Operations and SEO team. This team creates strategies to grow audiences through search and other platforms and supports newsroom sections in executing the most-compelling news report possible.

This editor must obsess over news and be able to move quickly to turn insights from traffic patterns into tactics to reach audiences. They will need to be able to focus in on breaking news and take a wide lens to evaluate long-term strategies on SEO, recirculation and reader experience and make recommendations to meet our goals. Organization and experimentation are paramount to this position. This editor will partner closely with our Product teams.

The daily duties of an operations and SEO editor can include optimizing stories for search and other platforms, using Google Analytics to perform audits of coverage, identifying trending stories worthy of further coverage and developing specific publishing strategies for a series of stories or a big upcoming live event, such as a rocket launch, the Oscars or congressional hearings.

Please consider applying if you meet most of these requirements: Four years of journalism experience, a history of growing audiences through search, a demonstrated ability to work with reporters and editors, experience building products to help readers navigate the website and expertise in using analytics to make real-time and strategic decisions.

Editors on this team may rotate between desks over time, so while subject matter knowledge is valued, more important are audience-specific skills. This position is based in our Washington newsroom and is not eligible for remote work.

The cover letter should be addressed to Editor of Operations and SEO Bryan Flaherty, Chief Product Officer and Managing Editor Kat Downs Mulder, and Managing Editor Krissah Thompson.
