Duties

  • Provide support in the collection, preparation, and analysis of data to improve the estimation of BEA's regional statistics.
  • Help produce components of larger projects that detail the regional distribution of U.S. economic activity at the state, metropolitan area and/or county level.
  • Collect, compile, and manipulate economic data using various statistical or econometric techniques.
  • Analyze data and identify patterns and anomalies.
  • Communicate in writing and in person about economic statistics, concepts, and statistical procedures as part of a collaborative work process.

Due to COVID-19, the Bureau of Economic Analysis is currently in an expanded telework posture. If selected, you may be expected to temporarily telework, even if your home is located outside the local commuting area. Once employees are permitted to return to the office, you will be expected to report to the duty station listed on this announcement within 30 calendar days. At that time, you may be eligible to request to continue to telework one or more days a pay period consistent with the Bureau of Economic Analysis telework policy and approval from your supervisor.

This position has a NTE date 12/31/2022.

**This position is temporary and there is NO promotion potential beyond the grade that you are selected for during the entire time period you are employed under this announcement.**

If a degree has been obtained or nearing completion, please include a letter of acceptance (on official letter head) into another degree or certificate program to show proof of eligibility.

This position will be filled under the Pathways Internship Program. This Program allows students to gain paid work experience while pursuing a degree, diploma or certificate at a qualifying institution. Under the Pathways Program, students who successfully complete all work, study, qualifications, and other eligibility requirements may be offered a permanent position work for our agency upon graduation or completion of a qualifying certificate.

At the Agency's discretion, students hired under the Pathways Program may be non-competitively converted to a term, career, or career-conditional appointment with a possible Full Performance Level (FPL) of Band II (GS-7-10) (FPL varies based on hiring department).

This position is in the excepted service.

This position may be eligible for telework; additional criteria will be required (e.g., supervisory approval).

Qualifications

BASIC ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: You must be enrolled or accepted for enrollment in an accredited high school, technical or vocational school, two-year or four-year college or university, graduate or professional school (go to www.ope.ed.gov/accreditation/ to verify accreditation status). Individuals who are enrolled must be taking at least a half-time academic, vocational, or technical course load leading to a degree, diploma, or certificate.

Applicants must have at least a 3.0 GPA.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS

Degree: behavioral or social science; or related disciplines appropriate to the position.

Grade Level Requirements:

Band II (GS-7 level): In addition to meeting the Basic Entry Requirements above, applicants must have the education listed below.

Completion of 1 full academic year of graduate level education (18 credit hours, 27 quarter hours); or Eligibility under the Superior Academic Achievement Provision and completion of a bachelor's degree.

S.A.A. is based on (1) class standing, (2) grade-point average, or (3) honor society membership.

1. Class standing -- Applicants must be in the upper third of the graduating class in the college, university, or major subdivision, such as the College of Liberal Arts or the School of Business Administration, based on completed courses. (Applicant will need to show proof of his/her class standing -Recommended that you submit proof along with your documents)

2. Grade-point average (G.P.A.)-- Applicants must have a grade-point average of: a. 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B" or better) as recorded on their official transcript, or as computed based on 4 years of education, or as computed based on courses completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; or b. 3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B+" or better) based on the average of the required courses completed in the major field or the required courses in the major field completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum.

3. Election to membership in a national scholastic honor society -- Applicants can be considered eligible based on membership in one of the national scholastic honor societies. These honor societies are listed by the Association of College Honor Societies. (Recommended that you identify in your resume/documents which honor society you are associated with)

Experience: For the Band II/ (GS-07), you must have one year of experience at a level of difficulty and equivalent to the Band I/(GS-05) grade level in the Federal service.

Examples of specialized experience include: preparing basic reports to present economic data; individual economic basic research assignments requiring planning, information assembly, analysis and evaluation and conclusions or requiring the basic evaluation and interpretation of economic information.

Combination of education and experience, as described above.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
