Health Equity Lead NurseThe George Mason University, Student Health Services Department invites applications for a Health Equity Lead Nurse position. About the Department: Student Health Services (SHS) provides health care services at George Mason University. SHS provides primary care services and health promotion to eligible students at Mason, including but not limited to, initial and follow up assessment, history taking, physical exam of patients, utilization of differential diagnosis, appropriate interventions, consultations and referrals as indicated, and basic emergency treatment and stabilization. Staff provide services to faculty, staff, and visitors on an as needed basis.About the Position: The Health Equity Lead Nurse performs roles in both the areas of health equity and clinical services. The HE nurse will support the efforts of SHS in evaluating and improving health equity for Mason students. The efforts may include, but are not limited to, the following: serve as Health Equity nurse educator, identify, evaluate, and improve areas of health care disparity among the Mason student population, support an inclusive environment at SHS through providing training on cultural competence, health literacy, accessibility, and other pertinent topics. The Health Equity Lead Nurse will also serve as a clinic nurse. In that role, they support the clinic health care providers with ambulatory nursing health care skills and services. They maintain a safe and orderly flow of patients through the clinic. The nurse participates in student immunization review and administration, allergy treatment immunotherapy, mass flu clinics, telephone and in-person triage, provides wound care, treatments and medication administration ordered by the providers. In addition, the clinic nurse participates in peer review, CQI, Risk Management, Utilization Review and provides input for policy and procedure process changes or revisions. Responsibilities:Health Equity InitiativeWorks as key member of SHS Anti-Racism Inclusive Excellence (ARIE) Committee to help SHS reach its goals of improving health equity for GMU students. Assists in identifying reasons for access to care disparities among student population, evaluating health equity, including, but not limited to, identifying appropriate metrics to monitor and planning appropriate interventions. Provides training to SHS staff on topics related to health equity. Provides training within the University community on health equity related topics as appropriate. Collaborates with other departments at Mason to support the ARIE Initiative.Triage (Telephonic and In-Person)Delivers safe and effective triage to students walking in or calling the clinic for acute appointments; andUtilizes approved protocols for triage and complies with documentation requirements as stated in the triage policy and procedure.Clinic Procedures and TreatmentsClinic procedures and treatments; andCompletes annual competency review requirements.Manages Patient FlowMaintains a safe, efficient and orderly flow of patients through the clinic; andAccurately utilizes the EMR and Nurse Order Monitor for documentation and clinic flow monitoring.Immunizations and Allergy ImmunotherapyAdministers immunizations and allergy immunotherapy;Transcribes immunization records; andMaintains knowledge and skill of changing CDC and WHO requirements.Laboratory Functions - ClinicalMaintains proficiency in phlebotomy skills, performance of CLIA waived tests and knowledge of basic laboratory processing requirements; andCompletes lab competencies.CommitteeParticipates as a member on the SHS ARIE committee.Special ProjectsCompletes summer, winter projects as assigned; andSeeks, develops and participates in special projects assigned or volunteered to support continued training, education, improvements and team building;Required Qualifications:Must be a graduate of an accredited Bachelor of Science degree in Registered Nursing;Licensed as a Registered Nurse in Virginia or valid Multi-State License;Interest in the area of health equity;Experience and knowledge of adult ambulatory care practices; andDemonstrated effective communication skills.Preferred Qualifications:MSN preferred;One year experience in adult medicine or college health setting; Knowledge of adolescent and adult immunization requirements;Phlebotomy skills and IV training;Knowledge of Allergy Immunotherapy;Healthcare Provider BLS certification;At least three years of nursing experience in a hospital or health care setting, in addition to clinical experience obtained while seeking a nursing degree; At least one year of experience in a physician's office (preferably adult medicine or college health); andKnowledge of EMR.
