Duties

The Nurse Practitioner will work as an independent licensed practitioner under the medical direction of the supervising SICU attending, the Medical Director of the SICU, and/or the supervising surgical attending.

The Nurse Practitioner's goal is to promote wellness and prevent illness/injury. Timely and concise documentation of care. Understanding of the needs of the organization and is responsible for facilitating the fulfillment of the VAMHCS mission, vision, and values.

Qualified candidates will demonstrate:
  • Leadership, experience, and creativity in approaches to the management of complex patient care.
  • Wide background of experience, an intuitive grasp of clinical situations, and capability to make efficient and timely diagnoses.
  • Ability to apply advanced clinical knowledge and judgment in a multidisciplinary care environment.
  • Ability to apply professional standards of care, scientific evidence, and best practices to improve programs and/or service activities.
  • Scope of practice include but are not limited to:
  • Performance of comprehensive patient health assessments, appropriate ordering of diagnostic tests and studies, use of critical judgment in the formulation of differential diagnoses and management plans, and prescription of appropriate pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatments in the direct management of acute and chronic illness.
  • Leading and organizing multidisciplinary delivery of care.
  • Arrangement of discharge, follow-up care and/or patient referrals.
  • Functioning as a resource and a consultant to other members of the multidisciplinary team.
  • Work Schedule: In order to fulfill the above responsibilities, qualified candidates should expect to maintain a flexible schedule with coverage responsibilities that include nights, weekends, and holidays.

    Qualifications

    Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. (NOTE: This applies to the past, current, and upcoming VA Health Professional Trainees (HPT) only. HPT is an individual appointed to temporary positions in one or more VHA medical facilities performing clinical or research training experiences to satisfy program or degree requirements or receiving VA Health Professional Scholarship Program. HPTs can be either VA-paid or Without Compensation (WOC).

    Basic Requirements:
    • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
    • English Language Proficiency. In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English.
    • Education. Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing ( ACEN ) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education ( CCNE ). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
    • Licensure. Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
    • Certification. Full and current certification as a nurse practitioner from the American Nurses Association or another nationally recognized certifying body.
    Nurse Practitioner and Clinical Nurse Specialist. On and after March 17, 2009, registered nurses appointed or otherwise moving into these assignments must meet and maintain the following additional qualifications. This includes employees appointed before March 17, 2009, who obtain such qualifications on or after March 17, 2009.

    Nurse Practitioner. A nurse practitioner must be licensed or otherwise recognized as a nurse practitioner in a State, possess a master's degree from a program accredited by the NLNAC or CCNE, and maintain full and current certification as a nurse practitioner from the American Nurses Association or another nationally recognized certifying body. The certification must be in the specialty to which the individual is being appointed or selected.

    Preferred Experience:
    • 2 or more years NP experience in inpatient care/acute care
    • ICU experience or comparable critical are experience

    Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:
    • Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
    • Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience.
    • Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience.
    • Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
    • Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience.

    Physical Requirements: This position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. This position requires potentially long periods of continued walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, and pushing. Transferring patients and objects may be required. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations or operative/invasive procedures. Must complete annual Employee Health requirements, such as but not limited to annual TB screening or testing, as a condition of employment.

    The work requires some physical exertion such as long periods of standing; walking in a hospital setting; recurring bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, or similar activities; recurring lifting of moderately light items such as intravenous fluid bags, reams of paper; or occasional lifting of heavy items (over 40 pounds). The work may require specific, but common, physical characteristics and abilities such as above average agility and dexterity.

    Annual leave shall accrue for full-time Nurses, and Nurse Anesthetists at the rate of 8 hours for each full biweekly pay period.
