Senior Communications Specialist

Position Number: 104896 Full-Time, Regular Exempt

The University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business is seeking a well-qualified Senior Communications Specialist to join the team in the Office of Undergraduate Studies. One of 13 schools and colleges located on the University of Maryland, College Park campus, the Smith School is a recognized leader in management research and education for the global economy. The school is consistently ranked among the world’s top business schools by leading business publications such as Business Week, Financial Times, Economist and the Wall Street Journal.

The Senior Communications Specialist manages publication of a weekly newsletter, develops advanced editorial content related to complex topics, supports media relations activities, participates in marketing and events planning, and provides other services to support the Marketing Communications team at the Robert H. Smith School of Business. Incumbent should be able to translate complex research topics into engaging language and craft research stories that capture the media’s attention. The ideal candidate can cultivate mutually beneficial relationships with faculty, has extensive media contacts and a track record of successfully pitching stories to Tier-1 media. In addition to being an excellent writer and communicator, this person must be a stellar project manager, working to set the editorial calendar and produce multi-media content for a weekly e-newsletter. This position requires someone who can work with deadlines, self-manage many competing priorities and show excellent judgment in creating content that positions Smith School faculty as thought leaders.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in English (or related field) plus a minimum of 7 years of professional experience writing for traditional or new media. Exceptional writing skills. Able to produce clean, compelling, jargon-free copy; translate complex concepts for a wide audience; identify trends and generate story ideas. Impeccable grammar; attention to detail. Excellent interpersonal skills; able to build mutually beneficial working relationships with faculty. Team player; self-starter; enjoys working with diverse team. Excellent organizational skills; able to work on multiple projects with minimal supervision, meeting deadlines in a high-volume, fast-paced environment. Familiarity with social media. Adept at using social media to promote content. Preferences: 10+ years of experience preferred. Experience in business and higher education preferred.
