Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) is seeking an experienced epidemiologist to lead the Environmental Epidemiology Program in an expanding Division of Epidemiology and Population Health. Foci of this position include surveillance, investigation, prevention, and reduction of disparities for communicable and non-communicable conditions such as vector-borne and zoonotic diseases, toxic substance exposures, and impacts of climate change. Key capabilities for this position include strategic thinking and planning; an ability to catalyze and coordinate work with other agencies and the community; and strong epidemiological skills. Fairfax County Health Department is the largest public health department in Virginia, serving 1.2 million residents in the National Capitol Region from diverse ethnic, cultural, and economic backgrounds.

As part of the Division of Epidemiology and Population Health, and working with the Division of Environmental Health Services, this position:

  • Oversees the planning and implementation of human and environmental epidemiologic surveillance and investigation of vector-borne diseases, zoonotic diseases, and toxic substance exposures.
  • Develops and implements strategies to prevent exposures and illness, and to reduce disparities.
  • Examines and works to mitigate the effects of environmental exposures and climate change through the lens of population health, equity, and environmental justice.
  • Serves as a subject matter expert in environmental epidemiology and collaborates with other programs within FCHD, other Fairfax County agencies, and community organizations.
  • Conducts senior-level research and analyses of epidemiological data and prepares study reports, publications, and research papers.
  • Evaluates environmental and disease intervention programs and recommends program changes to improve quality and effectiveness.
  • Supervises professional staff and serves as part of the leadership team for the Division of Epidemiology and Population Health.

Note: The hourly salary rate will not exceed the midpoint of $46.64/hour.

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Advanced degree in epidemiology: doctorate degree (PhD) plus two years of experience in epidemiology-related work, or master's degree in Public Health (MPH) or Master of Science (MS) with graduate work in epidemiology and/or biostatistics plus five years of experience in epidemiology-related work.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
Valid driver's license.
AED- Required within 60 days
CPR- Required within 60 days

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
The preferred candidate will have extensive knowledge of public health principles and practices of communicable diseases, including vector-borne diseases, zoonotic diseases, and toxic substance exposures. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Proven ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships. Ideal candidate must be self-motivated, results driven, detail-oriented, and demonstrate clear and concise oral and written communication skills. Must have strong data analysis skills. Prior supervisory experience or demonstrated work experience monitoring and directing the work of others. Previous experience serving in a leadership role is highly desired. Registered Environmental Health Specialist/Registered Sanitarian credential preferred.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, a check of the Child Protective Services Registry, a sanction screening, and a driving record check to the satisfaction of the employer.

All newly hired employees are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 (two weeks after the last required dose) as a condition of employment or obtain approval of a medical or religious exemption prior to their start date. Proof of an exemption or vaccination status will be required during the pre-employment onboarding process. New employees who obtain an exemption from the vaccine mandate for medical or sincerely held religious beliefs may be subject to a weekly testing requirement. Vaccinated employees and employees with a medical or religious exemption will complete the attestation online on their first day of employment or shortly thereafter.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Job is generally sedentary in nature; however, job entails walking, standing, sitting, climbing stairs, reaching, and bending. Employee may be required to lift or carry up to 25 lbs. occasionally. Uses hands to grasp, handle, or feel. Visual acuity is required to read data on a computer monitor. Incumbent must be able to operate keyboard driven equipment and computer. Position frequently communicates and must be able to exchange accurate information with others verbally and in writing. Ability to drive a vehicle. Generally, works in an office environment yet may occasionally be required to perform job duties outside of the typical office setting. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
