Program Overview: The DEA SOD (Drug Enforcement Administration - Special Operations Division) is a division within the DEA SOD, which forwards information from wiretaps, intercepts, and databases from various sources to federal agents and local law enforcement officials. Their mission is to counter any drug and narcotics-related activity that occurs within and coming from outside the US Border that may come from both foreign and domestic criminals. Part of their mission requires quintessential information that is translated/interpreted by linguists who can help provide insight into what illegal activities may be occurring daily. Roles & Responsibilities: Providing extensive knowledge of slang terminology in various Spanish dialects. Listen to or read communications in the source language/ dialect and provide immediate verbal summaries to law enforcement personnel, followed by a typed - concise, and accurate synopsis of the oral and/or written communication in the government-approved computer system, Render a written (typed) word for word rendition of audio and/or video recordings in the source language, using required format. Provide an accurate rendition of the source language, conveying the true meaning (s) into Standard English. Transcriptions and/or translations must be court ready. Qualifications: A Bachelor's Degree: Major study in the appropriate foreign language from an English-speaking college or university resulting in equal foreign language and English grammatical skills. Enabling the individual to comprehend, write, and speak that language at the native or near-native level. A minimum of four (4) years combined work and educational experience in translating, interpreting, or other work requiring the use of English and another language. Enabling the individual to comprehend, write, and speak that language at the native or near-native level. Secret clearance required. Excellent command of the English language and have the ability to provide clear, concise, oral and written communications. Skills necessary to listen to and comprehend a foreign language with native or near-native ability, and to follow accurately the basic elements of conversation, whether written or verbal. Skills necessary to read and comprehend a foreign language with a native or near-native ability, and to read and understand various text-types. Ability to comprehend slang and colloquial expressions in a foreign language and translate them into their English equivalent. A sufficiently broad vocabulary in English that paraphrasing or explaining is unnecessary. Ability to work well under pressure to meet specific deadlines. A minimum of 40 wpm typing/word processing skills. The Government may waive the basic typing skill proficiency level under extenuating circumstances. The COR will evaluate the circumstances on a case-by-case basis. Ability to understand the specific tasks being processed and produced. Ability to effectively understand face-to-face speech with sufficiently broad vocabulary that paraphrasing or explanations are unnecessary. of the functions and duties described herein for Linguists.
