This Engineering Lab Technician 2will support the Solid Propellants and Materials group at our growing site near Culpeper, in rural Orange County, Virginia (1.5 hours drive from Washington DC). Under limited supervision and following established policies and procedures, the Engineering Lab Technician will conduct a variety of tasks initially supporting the liner/insulation laboratory.Our Engineering Lab Technicians provide valuable assistance to engineers by their ability to reduce engineering concepts, drawings, sketches, and ideas to practice in a laboratory environment. They are able to: Create, fabricate, modify, repair, assemble, and disassemble articles to make models, prototypes or test articles. Set up and conduct tests/experimental procedures in accordance with specification requirements under environmentally controlled conditions (temperature, humidity, environment, etc). Design experiments and conduct tests in a controlled fashion to be able to produce consistent, repeatable results in a meaningful way. Assist engineers by following specification procedures and instructions in the development process and demonstrating the production readiness and maturity of the processes envisioned by the engineers, such as adhesive bonding of specimens, composite lay-up of components, insulating prototypes, and/or producing experimental/production batches of Energetic/Inert compounds. Essential Job Functions (Including % of Time for Each) 40% - Demonstrates level of proficiency in operating equipment, assembling parts, conducting tests and understanding of the nature of the work. Capable of obtaining results and assessing the validity of the results. Minimal supervision with regard to performing controlled experiments with standardized procedures. 35% - Perform routine tests, collect data, operate equipment in accordance with standard procedures. Demonstrates proficiency in following detailed work standards and following safety protocols. Demonstrates proficiency in acquiring skills and performing work with specialization as required. 25% - Conducts laboratory procedures for chemical analysis with wet chemical techniques or analytical instruments. Other procedures include performing mechanical testing, environmental exposure, and propellant compatibility testing to evaluate the suitability of materials for specific product or process applications. Requirements Requires an Associate's degree with an emphasis in Chemistry or other appropriate discipline plus at least one (1) year of relevant experience, but candidates who have not completed a related Associate's degree must have an equivalent combination of education and experience, such as a high school diploma (or equivalence) plus at least five (5) years directly related physical science, chemical, electronic and/or mechanical experience. May be required to obtain and maintain a US Security Clearance at the appropriate level. Requires US Citizenship, US Permanent Residency or other status as a US Person. Must be able to satisfy federal government requirements for access to government information, and having dual citizenship may preclude you from being able to meet this requirement. Work Environment/Physical Requirements: Work place may include areas where a wide variety of chemical materials are used and stored. May involve potential exposure to variable noise levels. Must customarily have a high consciousness for personnel and equipment safety. May require the use of personal protective equipment such as safety glasses, safety shoes, shop coat, and respirator. Employees in this position must possess mobility to work in a standard office setting and to use standard office equipment, including a computer; stamina to sit or stand and maintain attention to detail despite interruptions; may occasionally lift/carry/push/pull up to 25 pounds; may require occasional walking, climbing, stooping, crouching, and/or bending; and vision to read printed materials and a computer screen, and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone.
