We provide leadership for the university community by:Creating transformational educational programs and initiatives;Building campus and community partnerships;Supporting student academic success;Facilitating Mason Impact activities; andProviding education and support for learning outcomes assessment.The mission of the Office of Academic Advising is to facilitate student success at George Mason University, the Office of Academic Advising provides;Collaborative leadership for consistent and quality academic advising;Academic advising services for Exploratory, Pre-Health, and other student populations, andOnboarding training, professional development opportunities and resources for academic advisors, faculty, and staff.About the Position:Reporting to the Academic Advising Coordinator, the Mason Academic Advisor I - Exploratory lays the foundation for academic success at Mason and beyond by guiding students in the selection of a major based on their academic, career and personal goals and interests, transitioning them to advising within an academic unit. The Exploratory advisor will take a holistic advising approach with students and discuss academic, career, and personal interests, make connections to class selection and career goals, and provide information on major selection, academic policies, procedures, and practices. This also includes working through various academic requests, forms and appeals. Exploratory Academic Advisors at Mason contribute to Mason's strategic goals of preparing career-ready graduates, while increasing graduation and retention rates.Responsibilities:Academic AdvisingResponsible for advising an assigned caseload of students terminated from their academic major, with a focus on guiding and redirecting students to selecting a new major that is in-line with their academic, career, and personal goals and interests, ultimately transitioning them to advising within an academic unit;Communicate and collaborate with academic units about students redirected to a different major to provide quality and consistent academic advising toward a new major;Provide individual and group advising meetings for students that will take place in-person and virtually;Communicate timely with students via email and phone providing thorough and accurate responses to students' questions and concerns;Advise students in course selection and major declaration; guide students in program and university requirements; maintain continued interaction and follow-up with assigned students;Provide information on academic policies, procedures and practices;Assist with registration and other necessary procedures for degree progress and timely graduation;Organize and maintain office files and student records, to include advising notes in Navigate CRM, and email exchanges; andWork occasional evening and weekend hours, particularly in the summer for orientation related activities and admissions events.Student Impact and OutreachSupport admissions and orientation events, internship coordination processes to include internship advising and related paperwork, administrative and programming responsibilities, curriculum development, and/or other duties as assigned;Identify co-curricular opportunities, such as study abroad, undergraduate research, student activities and other campus events;Work closely with students on warning, probation, returning from suspension and terminated from the major students to develop student success plans and increase likelihood of timely major selection and degree completion; andDevelop resources and materials for student advising to be distributed to students electronically and physically.Training and TechnologyAdvisors are required to participate in university wide advising training and ongoing professional development internal and external to Mason; andAdvisors are required to utilize the chosen university platform for tracking and reporting student interactions and making referrals.Other DutiesParticipation or coordination of first year student experience and retention programming for Exploratory students;Attend regular meetings with key stakeholders involved in the development and implementation of programs; andServe on committees and other projects as assigned.Required Qualifications:Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience;Outstanding verbal and written communication, organizational skills, and outreach skills;Demonstrated working knowledge of student transitional issues;Demonstrated knowledge of academic advising and career development as it pertains to exploratory, undeclared, terminated (from major) and non-degree undergraduate students;Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines, work accurately and quickly with attention to detail, and be able to manage multiple complex programs and projects simultaneously;Demonstrated commitment to customer service;Demonstrated conflict resolution skills;Demonstrated ability to work with a culturally and ethnically diverse population of students, faculty, and staff;Some professional experience (generally one to three years) working in a university setting; andExperience with or demonstrated knowledge in one or more of the following areas: academic advising, success coaching, orientation, disability services, veteran's services, career services, student involvement, and student rights and responsibilities. Preferred Qualifications:Master's degree in Higher Education, Student Personnel, Counseling or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience;Knowledge of Mason curriculum, policies and processes;Experience with educational database management systems and customer relationship management systems (CRM);Prior experience in academic advising or student academic coaching programs; andDemonstrates experience with leadership, communication, program development, and administrative skills in their previous experience and interview process.
