Job Description

Press Operator Trainee will be assigned to a Press Team upon completion of the training class to learn press operations including but not limited to folder operation, setting color, make-up of pasters, etc. Upon entering the Pressroom, the Press Operator Trainee must meet the requirements of each successive 90-day review until the experienced operator level is reached. Tasks Performed:
  • Mark up press
  • Spots plates, re-plate, plate up press, and strip plates off press
  • Check datelines and folios in paper
  • Check color dots to ensure correct order
  • Mark up chalk board or posts lists of re-plates
  • Complete press preflight checklist and pre-sets
  • Check units and web catchers for wraps after web breaks
  • Load newsprint rolls in the press
  • Make paster pattern according to TWP specs on all rolls, checking all rolls for damage
  • Fill out and maintains reel reports for entire run
  • Check all infeed rollers and reel tension on running rolls
  • Correctly positions black tape on rolls and sets paste pattern position sensor knob (commutator) for each paster
  • Perform preflight checklist to ensure all rolls are in running position and ARL is in auto position
  • Set manual tension and floater roller
  • Monitor floating rollers on reels
  • Check and adjust rollers as needed
  • Physically moving (pushing/lifting) partial rolls of newsprint which are on the floor
  • Removing cores (five to 25 pounds from press)
  • Handling bundles of newsprint
  • Helps others as needed

Requirements:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • History of prior excellent job performance
  • Dependability-must have good attendance
  • Ability to display initiative
  • Ability to work in a safe manner around heavy equipment
  • Works well with others and within a team environment
  • Performs individual tasks completely and is goal oriented
  • Ability to work under pressure, meeting deadlines
  • Ability to trouble shoot
  • Ability to accept responsibility and be accountable
  • Ability to accept and learn from constructive criticism
