Job Description:

The AVID elective teacher is responsible for advocating and promoting academic success and equity for all students. This person will teach and promote 21st-century reading, writing, speaking, listening, organization, and collaboration skills, which will enable all students to be prepared for the next level and eventually higher education. They will strategically model and teach (WICOR) writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization, and reading skills, which are all significant pieces to the AVID curriculum, and will be expected to attend a three-day virtual and face-to-face training.

In addition, this person will foster the AVID tutorial process and create opportunities for team building and motivate students to enroll in rigorous courses and preparation for higher education through the organization of college visits, community and service opportunities, and classroom guest speaker engagements. This person will serve on the AVID site team and regularly collaborate with the site coordinator, team members, and in-class tutors. The elective teacher will also conduct recruitment and recommitment interviews and ensure fidelity to the AVID framework and philosophy. This position may require preparation and participation with college visits and some evening and weekend events associated with college preparation and advancement. Having a strong sense of or willingness to learn about college track course work, the ACPS Program of Studies along with the ability to demonstrate strong organizational skills is required for this job.

Job Qualifications:

The job of the AVID elective teacher requires that they have the ability and know-how to address the AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) underpinning and philosophy to support student achievement for all, will assist students with college and career readiness, and align their personal mission and vision to the AVID' work. This person reports directly to the supervising principal and will be supported by the AVID school site team coordinator and AVID District Director at the central office. They must have:
  • Minimum Bachelor's degree, Master's degree preferred
  • Valid Virginia Department of Education License or ability to obtain one with an endorsement area in English/Language Arts, history, math, science or physical education or other middle school certified area
  • Minimum of five years educational leadership and teaching experience in the areas of literacy, college and career readiness, counseling, and/or mentoring backgrounds preferred
  • Demonstrates strong expertise in the areas of lesson development, differentiation of rigor, reading and writing processes and strategies, language acquisition, culturally relevant teaching practices, and collaboration and organizational structures
  • Knowledge of best practices in virtual teaching and learning in a synchronous and asynchronous environment, with Canvas learning management system experience preferred
  • Demonstrates reliability, independence, leadership qualities, and interpersonal relationship skills necessary to work effectively as a team with students, teachers, tutors, administrators across two different school sites
  • Successful teaching experience in a culturally diverse community and evidence of engaging social-emotional and academic learning (SEAL) approaches to learning
  • Willingness to participates in ongoing professional learning opportunities with local AVID staff and AVID Center through online virtual training and AVID Center Summer Institute training

Clearances:
  • Criminal Justice Fingerprint/Background Clearance.
  • Tuberculosis Skin Test.

Public Health Compliance
  • Proof of COVID vaccination. Exemptions for religious/medical will be reviewed.
  • Must follow safety and health protocols.
