Job Description

The Washington Post photo team has an immediate opening for a confident, creative and experienced leader to serve as deputy director of photography.

This deputy will focus primarily on our foreign, climate and environment, and health and science lines of coverage. The ideal candidate will help drive innovative and powerful photography with an award-winning team of visual journalists who find fresh and compelling ways to tell stories.

We seek an effective and empathetic individual who is highly organized and has a strong record of assigning and producing powerful and original photojournalism. In addition to leading a team of photo assignment editors and photojournalists, this deputy photo director will partner with other editors in the newsroom, including visual enterprise editors and design editors, to generate high-impact visual storytelling for digital audiences across multiple platforms.

A collaborative spirit is essential to success in this role. Leading and mentoring staff at various experience levels are crucial aspects of this position, as is the ability to effectively manage operational needs such as budgeting, technology and logistics. This deputy will also share managerial duties with senior photo management to build strong visual storytelling partnerships across the newsroom and run a high-performing, fast-paced team.

This position is based in our Washington newsroom and is not eligible for remote work. Occasional evening and weekend work is required.
