Civil/Structural Engineering Intern

An Overview
The Department of Transportation and Environmental Services (T&ES) is seeking a Civil/Structural Engineering Intern who will work over the summer. The primary responsibility of the candidate is to assist the Bridge Engineering team in identifying the missing civil and structural, as built, and design drawings, find them in microfiche files and/or network drives, and organize the department’s asset management files. Other responsibilities of the candidate are to assist the other team members in conducting field visits, perform construction inspections, prepare traffic maintenance plans, gather field data, prepare inspection report, and perform office administrative work.

The Opportunity
This is a great opportunity for an engineer to learn about bridge design and construction practices as well as the planning required to design, inspect, repair, or construct a bridge in a city environment.
Demonstrates behavior consistent with the vision, mission, and values of the City of Alexandria, and provides excellent customer service;
The Bridge Division is currently involved in the construction of the West Glebe Road Bridge over Four Mile Run this summer.
The Bridge Division is currently working with Arlington County to design the new Mt. Vernon Bridge over Four Mile Run, which is planned to go to construction in 2023.

Minimum & Additional Requirements

To qualify for this position, all candidates must possess a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering with coursework in transportation, Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a related field and be able to read and understand structural drawings. As an Intern, you should have a basic level of understanding how to read civil and structural drawings and apply their education to the real world.

To be considered as an ideal candidate, one should also possess Graduate-level coursework in Civil Engineering, or a related field.
