UX Designer, Design Systems

At Capital One, we're building a leading information-based technology company. Still founder-led by Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Richard Fairbank, Capital One is on a mission to help our customers succeed by bringing ingenuity, simplicity, and humanity to banking. We measure our efforts by the success our customers enjoy and the advocacy they exhibit. We are succeeding because they are succeeding.

Guided by our shared values, we thrive in an environment where collaboration and openness are valued. We believe that innovation is powered by perspective and that teamwork and respect for each other lead to superior results. We elevate each other and obsess about doing the right thing. Our associates serve with humility and a deep respect for their responsibility in helping our customers achieve their goals and realize their dreams. Together, we are on a quest to change banking for good.

The global design system team is looking for a UX/UI designer to support the UI library for Capital One's largest servicing platform. We're looking for a designer who is detail oriented, a systemic thinker, and enjoys supporting other designers by helping to define and build design patterns, resources, and documentation. This designer will also support ongoing and new work by helping with communications, forums, outreach, and socialization of design system updates. This is a highly collaborative role that works horizontally across designers and product and tech partners across the organization and within our team.

The design systems team is a cross-disciplinary group of designers, developers, and product managers that support both the global Capital One design system, as well as the more localized systems across the company and lines of business. Our mission is to enable the creation of cohesive, on-brand experiences faster and more reliably using foundational elements and consistent UI building blocks.

This role is responsible for:
  • Creating and maintaining collaborative rituals and processes for designers working on diverse platforms across Capital One
  • Creating detailed and robust documentation and design guidance templates and resources
  • Supporting the engineering partners experience within the global design system
  • Supporting designers working within our systems by responding to questions and requests across different channels of communication, facilitating meetings and reviews, and providing updates and outreach
  • Maintaining and updating the servicing platform library of design resources and documentation
  • Collaborating with partners to surface needs and create new or updated standards and patterns
  • Working with tech partners to ensure patterns and designs are built and align with design and accessibility standards

What you'll bring to the role:
  • Experience working on or contributing to design systems
  • A systemic approach and thinking about design, with strong attention to details
  • Experience creating strong, inclusive partnerships that champion design
  • A collaborative approach to your work, and a desire to work across teams and disciplines
  • Experience working across both web and mobile platforms (iOS and Android)
  • Ability to work on your own, exploring and iterating from sketches to high fidelity designs and prototypes
  • Ability to be self-motivated and drive the work forward, working with ambiguity at times
  • Confidence in presenting your work across teams and generating buy-in and adoption, articulating and presenting the process and logic behind your design decisions
  • Confidence in giving and receiving constructive and collaborative feedback
  • Passion and desire to learn and grow, and help others do the same
  • A desire to help other designers and provide support and answer questions, helping to increase adoption and guide others on best practices
  • Comfort in helping to organize and manage process and norms around the work, helping to track work and create resources that improve how we work and provide insights for partners

Basic Qualifications

• At least 4 years of experience with User Experience design
• At least 4 years of experience with Data Visualization
• At least 4 years of experience using UI design tools
• At least 4 years of experience with prototyping tools

• At least 4 years of experience working and contributing to establishing design systems

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in a design or related field

• At least 4 years of experience working with Enterprise teams

• At least 4 years of agency experience

• At least 4 years of experience with Design Thinking, Lean UX, or similar framework that focuses on defining user needs early

• At least 4 years experience with illustration and storyboarding
