Communications Officer The George Mason University, Office of University Branding invites applications for the Communications Officer position. This position will promote and protect the university's brand by developing and promoting the research stories of Virginia's largest and most diverse public research university.George Mason University has a strong institutional commitment to the achievement of excellence and diversity among its faculty and staff, and strongly encourages candidates to apply who will enrich Mason's academic and culturally inclusive environment.About the Position:The Communications Officer's primary purpose is to find and tell stories that raise awareness about Mason's people, programs and research. S/he will achieve these objectives largely through reporting and writing news stories, and creating other multimedia content for the George, the Mason website and other university publications and platforms. The Communications Officer will pitch ideas, conduct interviews, and devise creative methods for telling Mason's stories. The position will also support university events through the creation of advance stories and post-event pieces that that promote and support Mason priorities.The Communications Officer will coordinate with the Office of University Branding team writers, videographer/photographer and other department content creators to tell Mason's stories. Other duties include developing tip sheets, expert profiles, and assisting with special events. The officer may be asked to work some evenings or weekends, as is required.The position will report to the Executive Director of News and Content but will also work across the university to identify and communicate Mason's most compelling stories. The incumbent will engage faculty, staff, students, alumni, and university leaders to develop stories about Mason's announcements, programs, and community.Required Qualifications:Bachelor's degree in Communications, Journalism, or a related field or equivalent combination of experience and education;Demonstrated experience writing and editing;Demonstrated experienced creating multimedia/platform content;Ability to consistently meet deadlines; andDemonstrated interpersonal skills, including being a team player capable of working collaboratively with other colleagues and leadership.Preferred Qualifications:Advanced Degree; andExperience in higher education environment.
