Associate Professor, Forensic ScienceThe George Mason University, Forensic Science Program located in the College of Science (COS), invites applications for our Associate Professor position in Forensic Anthropology. This is a full-time, 9-month term faculty position scheduled to begin in August 2022. The typical teaching load is 4 courses per semester. A course buy-out will be allowed for approved grant-funded research and/or other approved service duties and responsibilities.George Mason University has a strong institutional commitment to the achievement of excellence and diversity among its faculty and staff, and strongly encourages candidates to apply who will enrich Mason's academic and culturally inclusive environment.Responsibilities:The selected candidate will oversee the day to day and long-term operation of the outdoors Forensic Science Research and Training Laboratory (FSRTL) (commonly referred to as the Body Farm) including administrative responsibilities, research projects, instrumentation procurement and service, and will serve as a liaison with other GMU entities as well as federal and state agencies and other entities with an interest in Forensic Anthropology and the FSRTL.Other duties include but are not limited to:Teach undergraduate, graduate, and lab courses in Forensic Anthropology and other related courses which can include Data Analysis and Statistics, Instrumentation and Crime Scene Investigation, as well as others;Collaborate with Forensic Science faculty to develop new forensic science courses and labs, graduate certificates, and professional development courses in specialized areas of Forensic Science and Forensic Anthropology;Collaborate with Forensic Science faculty and other COS entities regarding research development and design in areas of Forensic Anthropology as well as other areas of Forensic Science in order to generate grant proposals that will support relevant, interdisciplinary scientific funded research;Develop and maintain a nationally recognized and externally funded research program in an applied area of Forensic Anthropology with a specific focus on establishing trans-disciplinary collaboration in research and application to the field of anthropology and forensic science;Collaborate with Forensic Science faculty, other COS entities and members of other GMU entities regarding research development, professional consulting and teaching and the real-life application of Forensic Anthropology concepts;Supervise and advise on graduate and undergraduate student research;Help to develop meaningful internship opportunities for students and serve as a mentor for them;Participate in the ongoing development of Forensic Science graduate certificates, courses, and labs for the professional development of practitioners; andParticipate in all accreditation efforts by the program, COS and the University.Required Qualifications:Applicants must be a PhD, Board Certified Forensic Anthropologist to apply for this position;A Minimum of 10 years of experience working in the field of Forensic Anthropology as a Board-Certified Anthropologist. This cumulative work experience must include at least one of the following: work in a forensic law enforcement laboratory; operational experience with state and federal law enforcement agencies in support of their criminal investigations;Experience working with human remains in operational situations and/or in a research laboratory;Experience working at a Forensic Science Research and Training Laboratory, commonly referred to as Body Farm;Applicants must have publications in relevant forensic science peer reviewed journals, and active memberships in relevant forensic science organizations like the American Academy of Forensic Science;Relevant research experience in support of furthering the field of Forensic Anthropology and its application to the field of Forensic Science;In-depth knowledge of analytical techniques and data interpretation associated with forensic anthropology research and forensic science research in general;Experience in the use and operation of a wide array of instrumentation commonly used by Forensic Anthropologists practitioners as well as instrument maintenance and set-up, preparation and validation of reagents, controls and calibrators, reporting of test results, etc. in their field of expertise;Teaching experience either at the University level or in a professional capacity, like in services, conferences etc.;Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills and a high level of integrity;Exceptional writing and speaking skills;Exceptional ability to liaison with external partners including state and federal agencies, COS partners, law enforcement agencies and private organizations to develop internships, specialized training, and career opportunities for students and secure external funding for research;Applicants must possess and demonstrate exceptional professional ethics and values in terms of behavior, the treatment of others, research and teaching;Applicants must have expert witness testimony experience in local, state and/or federal criminal courts; andExceptional interpersonal skills and conflict resolution skills, along with the ability to work well with others and be a team player.Preferred Qualifications:Knowledge and experience in:Analytical techniques and instrumentation in Scientific Data interpretation;Research methodology;Statistical Analysis and interpretation;Lab and case write-up skills; Experience in evidence collection, preservation and processing;Knowledge of principles and concepts of Forensic Science applications in addition to Forensic Anthropology;Case management and/or analysis experience;Proper methods to discard chemicals and biological materials;Experience with laboratory accreditation, safety program administration and knowledge of laboratory;Quality Assurance/Quality Control principles; andCurrent Valid Security clearance OR eligible for security clearances.About Us:The Forensic Science Program at George Mason University offers a master's degree, a graduate certificate, a bachelor's degree, and a minor in Forensic Science.
