Note: The length of this internship is expected to be approximately eight (8) months, April - December.

The Department of Parks & Recreation (DPR) is hiring a Camp & Sports Compliance Intern to assist in coordinating DPR summer camp programs and ensure contract compliance for all vendor-run summer camp programs. This Intern will perform regular and on-going program assessments of contracted summer camp providers, document compliance findings, and provide program feedback. During the fall, this intern will assist with the coordination of out-of-school break camps and support sports leagues. This position will conduct daily site visits to summer camp programs and general program support outside of the summer season.

Responsibilities include:

  • Performs site/program audits throughout the summer, minimum of two (2) per day, to confirm contract compliance including camp safety and preparedness, appropriate staff certifications, and student-staff program ratios;
  • Reviews and monitors camp rosters to ensure accurate participation counts, payments, identify fee reduction participants, and confirm eligibility of participants;
  • Reviews weekly survey results to identify trends and concerns to be addressed and provides feedback on results to leadership;
  • Responds to customer complaints via in-person visits, emails/phone calls and follows up to address concerns and issues;
  • Assists with managing vendor specialty visits to ensure timely completion of payments and invoices, including managing contractor invoices for camp programs;
  • Supports transportation and volunteer coordination for DPR camp offerings;
  • Supports the overall (Fall) administration of the youth basketball program, including background checks, uniforms, and scheduling;
  • Performs data analysis of (Fall) youth basketball registrations to be used for program evaluation;
  • Assists with the organization and development of the county-wide camp catalog ; and
  • Performs other duties as assigned .

Selection Criteria

Minimum: This position offers a summer internship opportunity to qualified individuals with little or no previous professional work.

  • Completion of at least two (2) years (60 semester hours) in a Bachelor's degree program at the time of hire;
  • Degree requirements: Parks & Recreation Management, Sports Management, Recreation & Leisure Studies, or related field;
  • Applicants may be asked to provide certified official transcripts; and
  • Employee may not have professional experience after the qualifying education requirement.

Substitution: There is no substitution for the education requirement.

Desirable: Preference may be given to candidates with experience in one or more of the following.

  • A 3.0 grade point average (GPA);
  • Assisting in the administration of recreational sports programs;
  • Working in a summer camp environment and understanding camp policies;
  • Familiarity with RecTrac or similar recreation management software;
  • Advanced skills with MS Office software including MS Word and MS Excel; and
  • Strong written and verbal communication and customer service skills.

Special Requirements

Applicant must possess, or obtain by time of appointment, a valid driver license. The applicant must authorize Arlington County to obtain, or the applicant must provide, a copy of the applicant's official state/district driving record. Any offer of employment may be contingent upon a favorable review of the applicant's driving record.

A pre-employment criminal records check will be conducted. It may include checks of the following: criminal record, driving record, education, professional licensure, and credit history. You may be required to sign a release authorizing the County to obtain your background information.
