This opportunity is being offered by National Aerospace Solutions, the team selected by the U.S. Air Force to conduct Test and Operations Sustainment at the Arnold Engineering Development Complex (AEDC). Work will be performed at the AEDC Hypervelocity Wind Tunnel No. 9 (Tunnel 9) located in Silver Spring, Maryland. Tunnel 9 provides aerodynamic simulation critical to hypersonic system development and hypersonic vehicle technologies at speeds from Mach 7 to Mach 18, a capability unmatched anywhere in the United States.

Job Summary:

Electrical Power Engineers are responsible for planning and design of a wide variety of electrical systems including underground/overhead distribution, installation of transformers and switchgear, substations, unit subs, MCCs, plant & building power, lighting systems, fire alarm systems, security systems, communication networks, grounding systems, and lightning protection systems.  This includes direct/in-house design for outside contractor installation as well as initiation and support of design/build subcontracts for performance of project scope.  Electrical systems engineers work closely with other systems engineers in development of electrical and design requirements and ensuring proposed designs meet those requirements. 

Job Duties:

• The candidate will ensure safe and reliable operation of all medium voltage subsystems required to operate the wind tunnel facility; including 480V to 13.8kV power distribution systems, transformers, power-rectifiers, switchgears and substations. Coordinate facility and equipment improvement projects, follow project lifecycle (planning, budgeting, schedule, and execution), perform electrical design of tunnel components including single lines, provide assistance troubleshooting problems with tunnel components, and review work for application of sound professional judgment. Originate or check calculations for electrical loads for mechanical and electrical equipment. Originate or check electrical drawings including equipment layouts, single lines, and wiring and schematic diagrams. Prepare specifications, estimates, and scope of work documents [for both in-house design/outside contractor installation work and design/build subcontract work]. Designs electrical equipment interface and installation details. Prepares electrical designs and construction drawings using 2-D / 3-D computer aided design (CAD), presentation graphics and electrical models. Leads studies (such as fault current, voltage drop, and reliability analysis) that require knowledge of principles and techniques commonly employed in electrical design work.
• Respond when systems malfunction during a test, troubleshooting and directive corrective maintenance activities (or calling in the appropriate systems engineer for additional support), ensuring a timely return to service.
• Perform root cause failure analyses and other equipment performance analyses when systems or processes fail and recommend remedial actions.
• Conduct and write up system safety hazard analyses and write clear work instructions.
• Update and maintain system documentation for systems of responsibility.

Basic Qualifications:

• B.S. degree in electrical engineering from a regionally accredited college or university and a minimum of 7 - 10 years of progressive and relevant engineering experience. Current US Citizenship required

Preferred Qualifications:

• Demonstrated skill in oral and written communication Good knowledge of major industry or regulatory standards (such as the National Electrical Code and IEEE standards) and design criteria pertinent to the electrical engineering discipline. Educational and/or work experience in dealing with electrical systems or electrical components of mechanical systems. Developmental experience such as practical work experience in design engineering or other relevant types of engineering such as systems startup, field engineering, or plant operations / maintenance in large industrial plants, utilities, process plants or other engineering/construction firms. Professional engineering certification. Experience writing Scope of Work documents.
