Assistant Dean, Strategic Communications and Marketing, College of Humanities and Social SciencesGeorge Mason University's College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHSS) invites highly qualified candidates to apply for our Assistant Dean of Strategic Communications and Marketing position. George Mason University has a strong institutional commitment to the achievement of excellence and diversity among its faculty and staff, and strongly encourages candidates to apply who will enrich Mason's academic and culturally inclusive environment.Responsibilities:As a member of the CHSS executive leadership team, and reporting directly to the dean, the incumbent will lead the College's strategic communications and marketing efforts related to enrollment growth and faculty, staff, and student activities, and collaborate on advancement/alumni engagement. The incumbent will also manage the college's brand, crisis communications, and news media, print, technology, web, and digital communications and ensure that the ITS and web needs of all the College's units are met and that clear and consistent representation of the College's and University's mission and visual identities across all media platforms is maintained.In this capacity, this position will:Lead the development and execution of a CHSS branding strategy (within the Mason rebranding rollout), a comprehensive CHSS communications plan, and an ITS and digital communications plan to support strategic enrollment growth and increase local and national awareness of the College's educational, research, and public service activities;Foster positive working relationships with internal and external partners to advance the College's vision and strategy for growth in enrollment, research, fundraising and alumni (re)engagement and to maximize resource cost allocation efficiencies and coordinated decentralization of communication, marketing, and ITS/web support services;Support the ITS and web needs of all of the College's units, ensure the clear and consistent representation of the College's and University's mission and visual identities across all media platforms, and ensure that the college's commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion is highlighted across all CHSS channels, including continuing the CHSS web team's work on digital accessibility;Supervise/mentor the College's communications, marketing, and ITS/web staff, contractors, and student interns and manage the CHSS marketing, communications, and ITS/web budgets;In collaboration with the CHSS academic affairs deans, develop, implement, coordinate, and periodically assess integrated marketing initiatives designed to support graduate enrollment growth and internal-to-Mason undergraduate recruitment through targeted communications across all appropriate media platforms (i.e., print, websites, short-form video, social media);Support the College's donor and alumni relations efforts by collaborating with the Advancement team on collateral, marketing/social media, campaign-related case statements, and donor recognition;Continue improving the College's custom content management system to prevent obsolescenses, improve ease of use, and support accessibility initiatives (as outlined in the college's IE plan) to ensure the college's website continues to function as the backbone of our digital communications strategy; as part of that strategy, prepare the college for a website redesign;Introduce and evaluate new methods and technologies for keeping the College and its constituents highly engaged;Independently identify public policy/news opportunities to showcase the College's work, including blogs, op-eds, etc.; andProvide the dean, senior leadership and faculty with talking points and briefing materials for major college events and presentation and support the planning and execution of special events and college-wide activities.Required Qualifications:Master's degree in a relevant field and 8+ years of applicable professional experience, preferably in a higher education environment or equivalent combination of education and experience;Demonstrated oral, written, digital, and visual communication and presentation skills;Demonstrated collaboration, persuasion, and consensus-building skills;Experience in leading, supervising, and mentoring an integrated communications and marketing team supporting branding work as well as crisis communications and news media, print, technology, web, and digital communications;Experience in building brands and in designing, implementing, and evaluating strategic marketing campaigns;Substantial experience in cultivating and guiding work processes between various functional units, including but not limited to, communications, information technology, academic affairs, advancement and alumni relations;Skill and experience in organizing resources and establishing priorities, budget preparation, and the ability to manage budgetary expenditures for compliance with approved budget;Skill and experience examining and reengineering operations and procedures as well as designing and implementing new technologies to improve quality outcomes;Ability to build and sustain robust partnerships within the College and University and with external service providers; andAbility to manage sensitive information, support a culture of inclusion and diversity, and foster a positive work environment.Preferred Qualifications:Experience with humanities and social science disciplines; andExperience with MS Office Products and marketing, communications-related software such as the Salesforce CRM platform, and social media technologies.
