Position Information
The Department of Environmental Services (DES) is seeking an Engineering Support Associate to become part of a team, performing multi-skilled engineering support work for the Water/Sewer/Streets Bureau. The work includes entry to advanced level technical engineering support of Arlington County's Water, Sewer, Storm Sewer and Street infrastructure.

Specific duties include:

  • Providing field and in-office customer services to internal and external customers;
  • Responding to inquiries from the public, other departments and contractor;
  • Coordinating investigative and testing aspects of the water quality control program;
  • Providing automation and administrative support to staff;
  • Managing and/or maintaining records systems related to the County's infrastructure;
  • Managing small construction repair programs and projects;
  • Conducting water quality sampling; and
  • Working with citizens, technical staff, and contractors

Selection Criteria
Education and experience: Graduation from high school, vocational school, a GED certificate or the equivalent; and some experience in one or more of the following areas:

  • Construction management;
  • Laboratory experience conducting tests;
  • Customer service in a trades environment; and/or
  • Automated records management.

Substitution: Bachelor's degree in construction management, engineering, architecture, or a related filed may substitute for up to one year of experience.

Desirable: Preference may be given to candidates with one or more of the following:

  • Possession of a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) A or B;
  • Knowledge of leak detection and water system flushing;
  • Knowledge of VDH requirements, including procedure for water quality sampling, chain of custody forms and non-compliance water quality testing;
  • Experience working with a relational database facilities maintenance program such as MS Access or Excel;
  • Experience with water quality software such as HACH WIMs and/or SCADA;
  • Experience reading engineering plans, schematics, maps, and drawings showing water and/or sewer systems;
  • Experience working with an automated work order management system (Cartegraph) and/or utility billing software (Cayenta);
  • Experience with engineering and administrative support; and
  • Experience working with citizens to resolve public work issues.

Special Requirements
Work is performed both outdoors in all types of weather conditions and within an office environment. The work environment includes exposure to drafts, noise, dust, grease, and dirt, and may include extended periods of standing, walking, bending, crouching, and lifting light to heavy objects and equipment.

Applicants must possess, or obtain by time of appointment, a valid motor vehicle operator's license from the applicant's place of residence. The applicant must authorize Arlington County to obtain, or the applicant must provide a copy of the applicant's official state/district driving record. Any offer of employment may be contingent upon a favorable review of the applicant's driving record.

An offer of employment will be contingent upon a favorable pre-hire background check conducted by the Sheriff's Department on all final candidates. It may include successful checks of the following: criminal record, credit history and DOT drug test and physical. You will be required to sign a release authorizing the County to obtain your background information.

Once hired, the employee will be on probation for one year.
