Job Description

The Washington Post is seeking a Product Designer to join its Product Design team. This team of UX, UI, visual designers and creative technologists leads design strategy and visual approaches for The Post's suite of digital products, including washingtonpost.com, our native iOS and Android apps, email, internal publishing tools, and paywall and account management experiences.

In this Product Designer role, you'll focus on the UX, UI, and visual design of our internal publishing tools. These tools help journalists create, publish and manage content in a variety of forms, including text, photographs, content packaging, release scheduling and planning. The ideal candidate will have passion for identifying users' pain points and experience with designing and developing tools that optimize user workflows. The role will include day-to-day collaboration with newsroom users, engineers, product managers, and publishing support.

You'll be part of a team of more than 30 designers. You'll collaborate with product managers and internal stakeholders across multiple teams to identify, ideate on and propose new approaches to our user experience to help redefine how The Post publishes content to our millions of digital news consumers.

Here's what you'll be working on:
  • Creating innovative experiences across our internal proprietary publishing tools suite
  • Designing and presenting mockups, wireframes, sitemaps, user flows, and prototypes that adhere to user-centered design principles to produce high-quality visuals, from concept to execution
  • Working with other designers to establish style guides, standards, and design systems
  • Partnering with engineering, newsroom, and product leadership to ideate and create new features and capabilities in our publishing tools
  • Work on the entire lifecycle of the product: research, user flows, prototyping, high fidelity comps, and collaboration with engineers on implementation
  • Identify opportunities for improvement in our products and process by leveraging your design experiences, best practices and user insights to recommend solutions

This ideal candidate for this role:
  • Must be hands-on with design and design strategy
  • Constantly looks for ways to optimize workflows with time-saving tools
  • Loves to collaborate closely with colleagues in research, product management, engineering and non-technical partners
  • Is organized, driven and excited about designing the storytelling toolbox of the future
  • Can clearly and passionately articulate the thinking behind a design
  • Is energized by problem-solving and loves to develop solutions for difficult problems
  • Enjoys gathering user and project requirements to create conceptual wireframes, prototypes, and final designs for user-facing and newsroom publishing products
  • Loves designing for content creation tools with a goal of elevating design and experience standards

You have:
  • A portfolio that shows a strong body of work including outstanding visual and user interface designs
  • 3-4 years of design experience on digital platforms
  • Experience designing interactive applications, preferably content creation systems
  • An established track record of producing business results through design
  • Knowledge of research techniques including user/stakeholder interviews, persona creation, journey mapping, and usability testing
  • A collaborative spirit and a proven ability to work well with others, building strong partnerships across teams
  • Understanding of designing for web, mobile, and native applications
  • Comfort with design and prototyping software like Figma, Zeplin, Sketch, the Adobe Creative Suite, ProtoPie, and Principle
  • Knowledge of front-end development and best practices for design implementation
  • Strong presentation and writing skills
  • Experience with or strong interest in digital media and news
