Manager - Cyber Legal Counsel

As a member of Capital One's Cybersecurity & Technology Business Counsel team you'll apply strategic and analytical skills to programs and initiatives driving Capital One's security and technology innovation. You'll dive in to understand the programs, governance and services that Capital One's cybersecurity teams deliver to the enterprise, and apply security and data protection laws and regulations to help manage legal risk. You'll be a key player on the legal team supporting innovation across Capital One, including in areas of third party risk management, security assessment programs, new laws and regulations and compliance. And you'll do it all in a collaborative, supportive environment that values your insight, promotes continuous learning, and rewards creative thinking.

To succeed in this role, you'll need strong legal and business skills. Written and oral communication and organizational skills are key, as is good judgment and the ability to focus on what really matters to drive business initiatives forward while clearly defining legal risk. You should have a successful track record of thriving in a fast paced, entrepreneurial and dynamic environment.

Here are some examples of tasks you would be responsible for:
  • Cybersecurity governance, including policies, standards and procedures review and development
  • Cybersecurity risk and maturity assessments/SOC assessments
  • Cyber education and awareness (training and phishing drills)
  • Cyber compliance review, audit and regulator response
  • Third Party Risk Management legal risk analysis and contract review
  • New law review and analysis, advocacy activities
  • Managing business and legal meetings, e.g., draft and manage meeting notes and outcomes, manage advice intake request forms and attendees
  • Managing and developing team projects and processes


Basic Qualifications:
  • Juris Doctor from an accredited law school
  • Active member in good standing of at least one state bar
  • At least 3 years of law firm or in-house counsel experience


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Personal interest in technology
  • 1+ years of experience in the technology and banking industries, either in-house or at a law firm
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments and work in a fast paced environment
  • Self-starter
  • Persistence in closing out tasks and projects
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in communicating legal and reputational risk issues to developers, engineers, analysts, and business and legal leaders
  • Ability to create a friendly and collaborative working relationships, particularly with their teammates, the rest of the legal department, internal clients, and outside counsel.
  • Experience with cybersecurity standards, frameworks, risk assessments and certification processes, to include, for example: SOC 1&2, ISO/IEC 27001, 27002, 27005, the NIST Cybersecurity Framework, PCI DSS and/or privacy laws and regulations is a plus.
