Job Description

The Washington Post is hiring a Senior Software Engineer for our Research, Experimentation and Development technology (RED) team. In this role, you will create new revenue-driving applications and products for the Washington Post's commercial advertising division. This critical role will be a part of a team that is creating new, innovative marketing and advertising products, and systems to change the way publishers make money. The RED team is deeply interested in changing the fundamentals of advertising technology by building performant and competitive tools and products.

  • Experiment with new and existing technologies to create new products for advertisers
  • Develop new applications and features using React and Node
  • Create clean, modern, testable and well-documented code
  • Collaborate with team members (RED) in designing and building highly-scalable applications and services for The Washington Post, advertisers and other publishers
  • Contribute to existing, platforms that have a critical role in the digital landscape that supports
  • Eagerness to explore and learn new software languages, tools and applications.
  • Solve problems using investigation and research and propose a variety of approaches in response to a diverse range of challenges.
  • Capable of digging in and understanding legacy code. Ability to inspect code bases and find opportunities to simplify and optimize solutions.
  • Lead technical aspects of projects, perform code reviews and mentor junior engineers
  • Work with a wide variety of engineering teams, design, product and newsroom stakeholders to support and build newsroom and public-facing tools and applications.
  • Active participation on a scrum team including story grooming, planning work backlog, work estimation, sprint planning, retros, demos, etc.

Minimum Qualifications
  • A minimum of 5+ years of hands-on experience as a software developer using modern development languages: React, Node, JavaScript, HTML and CSS3
  • Strong coding background in JavaScript
  • Thorough understanding of React and its core principles
  • Experience with common front-end development tools such as Babel, Webpack, NPM, etc.
  • Experiencing writing tests using frameworks such as Jest, Cypress and Nightwatch
  • Experience with Git.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience building web applications on AWS.
  • Experience working with server-side languages such as Python
  • Experience with end-to-end testing frameworks.
