Design Operations Manager, Capital One Software

We are currently seeking a Design Operations Manager for an exciting opportunity on our Capital One Software team. If you're an innovator and storyteller who embraces an environment where you can experiment, learn, and change banking for good, we would love to hear from you.

Capital One has taken a bold journey to build a technology company, while operating in a complex, highly regulated business. We have built out a large engineering organization, moved to the cloud, re-architected our applications and data platforms, and embraced machine learning at scale. Our AI/ML capabilities are now at the forefront of what's possible in banking. (e.g., Eno).

As we uncovered new challenges along the way, we built and battle tested new capabilities to meet those needs. We've open sourced several of the software tools we built, and we've developed a suite of internal solutions uniquely designed to meet the challenges of a digital-first, cloud-first business at scale.

Today, the Capital One Software team is exploring how these internal solutions across cloud, data, governance, and applications could serve the needs of other companies born or built in the cloud, and we are looking for a Design Operations Manager to join us in this venture.

What You'll Do:
You'll be asked to handle a variety of responsibilities, including:

Collaboration & Connection
  • Leading the business side of the design process for products and services, from concept to delivery
  • Partnering with design leads to coordinate and prioritize initiatives and resources, including resource planning and allocation
  • Encouraging innovation and helping shape and manage effective and efficient design teams
  • Advocating for prioritization of design centered product enhancements grounded in research and analysis
  • Evangelizing the impact of design with business partners by embracing and advocating for an experience design mindset
  • Building and maintaining strong working relationships by collaborating with technology, product, and business teams to uncover customer and business needs
  • Participating in the design process (e.g., stakeholder interviews, research, analysis, and work session facilitation) as necessary
  • Driving momentum by keeping the overall work portfolio and team on track
  • Working with partners and teams across various geographies and facilitating workflow of co-located groups
  • Connecting with design community peers by learning, sharing, and teaching, as well as participating in the internal Community of Practice


Leading & Developing Teams
  • Building and leading successful teams by mentoring, coaching, and elevating others
  • Guiding team members in strategy, research, alignment, analysis, process improvement, and change management
  • Navigating conflict resolution within your team as well as within projects, teams and partner relationships
  • Discovery & Delivery
  • Leading the strategic and tactical prioritization of design initiatives and workflows
  • Guiding and managing changes to scope, design, and delivery schedules to meet business needs with available resource
  • Maintaining a well-managed design team and project oversight by:
  • Overseeing and managing team structure (e.g., hiring and onboarding employees, managing contractors and vendors, balancing attrition)
  • Planning and managing budgets, forecasting, and scoping new engagements
  • Identifying and managing risks and mitigation plans
  • Reporting on the portfolio of work to stakeholders. This may include reporting on workflow, scope, resourcing, forecasting, and value of design
  • Overseeing overall portfolio health and team satisfaction


Basic Qualifications
  • At least 5 years of experience with design/creative operations, project management, or program management


Preferred Qualifications
  • Comfortable managing cross-channel experiences
  • Comfortable working with Product and Tech partners
  • Experience managing multiple large teams and portfolios of work
  • Familiarity with agile principles, project management methodologies and tools
