Position Information
Note: The length of this internship is expected to be approximately three (3) months, May 2022 to August 2022.

The Department of Environmental Services (DES) is seeking exciting and innovative Civil Engineering Summer Interns this summer! This role will offer a student with little or no prior work experience the opportunity to explore and prepare for a career in the design and construction management fields. This internship program will involve a rotation through the design and construction management sections within the Engineering Bureau. The Interns will support the Engineering Bureau, which provides full-scale, in-house surveying, design, and construction management services for public works capital improvement projects.

Specific duties may include

Design Duties:

  • Developing designs using Autodesk Civil3D or various modeling software;
  • Performing various engineering calculations; and
  • Producing construction cost estimates.
Construction Management Duties:

  • Reviewing construction drawing and specifications for urban infrastructure projects;
  • Performing field inspections of construction sites, provide oversight of contractors and construction activities, and monitoring construction progress and analyzing schedule updates;
  • Processing contract documents including change orders, invoice payments, requests for information (RFI), etc.; and
  • Performing other duties as assigned.

The ideal candidate will have a passion for learning and the ability to independently research alternate and/or efficient ways to perform tasks, along with strong communication skills.

Selection Criteria

Minimum: This position offers a summer internship opportunity to qualified individuals with little or no previous professional work.

  • Completion of at least two (2) years (60 semester hours) in a Bachelor's degree program at the time of hire;
  • Pursuing a Science, Engineering, or related degree;
  • Applicants may be asked to provide certified official transcripts; and
  • Employee may not have professional experience after the qualifying education requirement.
Substitution: There is no substitution for the education requirement.

Desirable: Preference may be given to candidates with one or more of the following.

  • A 3.0 (or above) Grade Point Average;
  • Experience in Autodesk Civil3D or similar CAD software; and
  • Proficiency in MS Office programs (Word, PowerPoint, SharePoint and/or Excel).

Special Requirements

Applicant must possess, or obtain by time of appointment, a valid driver license. The applicant must authorize Arlington County to obtain, or the applicant must provide, a copy of the applicant's official driving record. Any offer of employment may be contingent upon a favorable review of the applicant's driving record.

A pre-employment criminal records check will be conducted. It may include checks of the following: criminal record, driving record, education, professional licensure, and credit history. You may be required to sign a release authorizing the County to obtain your background information.
