Swim InstructorGeorge Mason University, Mason Recreation within the Division of University Life invites applications for a Swim Instructor. George Mason University has a strong institutional commitment to the achievement of excellence and diversity among its faculty and staff, and strongly encourages candidates to apply who will enrich Mason's academic and culturally inclusive environment.Responsibilities:The Swim Instructor position plays a significant role in the aquatic program at the Aquatic and Fitness Center, George Mason University Campus, and the community at large. Under the supervision of the Coordinator for Aquatics, the Safety Instructor will teach American Red Cross Learn to Swim courses in a safe and pleasant environment for the participants, and will assist in a variety of areas, including, but not limited to:Ensure the safety of class participants through consistent and equitable enforcement of the Learn to Swim Program's policies and procedures;Teach according to American Red Cross Learn to Swim Program following the guidelines of George Mason University Recreation and University Life;Observe the rules of the Aquatic and Fitness Center;Arrive on time prepared to instruct;Complete appropriate paperwork and lesson logs in a timely manner;Maintain an acceptable level of knowledge through a personal commitment to learning new information and instructional techniques;Maintain an acceptable level of "readiness" through a personal commitment to excellence in the area of fitness, knowledge, skill proficiency, and professionalism; andBeing a positive representative of Mason Recreation.Required Qualifications:All student employees are required to be trained in Water Safety Instructor, CPR, First Aid, AED, and Blood Borne Pathogens. For students that do not already possess these certifications, training will be provided by the department upon being hired. Other requirements related to the position include:Ability to work an average of 6 hours up to 40 hours per week;Demonstrated communication skills;Demonstrated customer service skills;Demonstrated scheduling and organizational skills; andWillingness to learn and grow.Program Description:Mason Recreation creates an atmosphere that encourages individuals to develop lifelong involvement in recreation, fitness wellness activities through both structured and informal opportunities that meet the dynamic needs of our diverse community. Mason Recreation provides opportunities for students, faculty/staff, alumni, and community members to participate in a variety of educational and fitness programs. Programs and services include group exercise, indoor cycling, yoga/Pilates, personal training, fitness related clinics and workshops, as well as health, wellness related events, as well as aquatic related activities. Intramural and Club sports are further activities that enhance the Mason Recreation experience and offerings. The Swim Instructor is a vital part of our organization and represents the safety of our facility.
