Part-Time Position

The City of Alexandria is located in northern Virginia and is bordered by the District of Columbia (Potomac River), Arlington and Fairfax counties. In pursuit of service excellence, the Recreation Leader III works closely with the Recreation Coordinator to develop, implement, and manage an Out of School Time Program site location.

Major areas of responsibility include:
  • Management of the day-to-day operation of the site location’s Out of School Time Program (OSTP), which operates during the school year and summer months.
  • Assist with the hiring, training, supervising, and evaluating of seasonal and part-time staff.

Recreation Leader III is an integral part of the Out of School Program (OSTP) operations and the Recreation Services Division. This includes managing the OSTP school year and summer camp programs and fostering an inclusive and welcoming environment for parents and participants. An engaged employee in this position plays an active role in the success and growth of the program, division, and department. The Recreation Leader III should be available to work Monday - Friday, 12:00 - 6:00 p.m school year, and various hours during summer and some holidays. Enthusiasm, flexibility, and excellent communication skills are needed to be successful in this position—the Recreation Leader III work under close supervision of the recreation coordinator.

The ideal candidate should possess good knowledge of the principles and practices of program management and community recreational work; knowledge of youth development principles and the developmental assets; ability to plan and direct program activities; ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers participants, and the public; ability to generate interest and participation in center activities with varied age groups; ability to lead the OSTP for all ages and the ability to communicate clearly and effectively both orally and in writing. Your ability to work independently and to use judgment within established procedures is critical. Your experience preparing reports, ability to organize, work with a variety of staff at all levels, and handle assignments across sections of the recreation services division will ensure success in this role.

The Opportunity
  • Plan develop and implement a successful OSTP for 200 elementary school-age children during the school year and summer.
  • Work independently or with the OSTP committee to develop and implement a benchmark evaluation model to ensure the successful delivery of the OSTP to be implemented by June 2, 2022.
  • Recruit, hire, coach, retain, and engage seasonal and part-time staff that work within the OSTP.
  • Conduct weekly OSTP staff meetings to foster engagement, teamwork, and skill development and ensure good communication and updates on the operational status of the program by June 2, 2022.
  • Hold consistent weekly or biweekly supervision meetings with staff under your purview by June 2, 2022.
  • Actively participate in two different divisions, department or city committees and/or workgroups by June 2, 2022.

The mission of Recreation, Parks & Cultural Activities is to enrich the City of Alexandria by creating meaningful experiences through public space, cultural activities, and programming. The City of Alexandria Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities received national accreditation from the Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies (CAPRA). National accreditation requires park and recreation agencies to meet 155 standards representing elements of effective and efficient park and recreation operations.

Minimum & Additional Requirements

High School Diploma and year three (3) years of related experience or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. First Aid training, valid driver's license issued by state of residence. Small Pool Manager: possession of a valid Red Cross or comparable Senior Life Saving and Swimming Pool Operator's Certificate. Assistant Pool Manager: (Large Pool) same as for a Small Pool Manager, plus two years swimming pool experience, and the ability to perform routine maintenance/repair work on pool equipment.

Preferred Qualifications

Completion of college-level courses in recreation, physical education, business management or related fields. Experience in community recreation at a level equivalent to a recreation leader III or any equivalent combination of experience in training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.


This position requires the successful completion of a criminal records background check and drug screening prior to employment.
