Job Description

The Washington Post is seeking a Lead Engineer to join our Article Team. This team works closely with engineering, product, and design to build new features that enhance our reading experience. You will be responsible for participating in each step of the development lifecycle from development and code review to automated testing and deployments.

We aim to maintain an accessible and performant site. This team will ensure that our vision impaired have the best experience possible on our site, and that those with slow internet connections can experience the Washington Post in an efficient and pleasurable way. We will be optimizing our search performance to deliver the news to the most readers possible.

You will dive deep into our React + NextJS codebase, execute on an engineering roadmap, and ensure quality of production deployments

Responsibilities
  • Lead Architects and other engineers to define vision for our architecture and drives us towards that vision and make needed adjustments to short-term priorities.
  • Establish engineering standards. Guide and mentor others. Perform code reviews.
  • Recommend modifications to the daily operations of the team.
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with stakeholder departments. Understand stakeholder's business processes and objectives. Balance response to requests, requirements, and priorities with adherence to Engineering strategic direction.
  • Keep the "vision" of the project and lead others toward its completion.
  • Interact with subordinates, peers and/or managers in other work groups / teams / vendors / customers to share information and improve workflow processes.
  • Lead a software engineering team in the development of features and products.
  • Allocate and track the work of individual contributors. Teach and train members of the team.
  • Oversee employee development and performance management.
  • Provide guidance, direction, and prioritization to teammates.
  • Assign responsibilities and tasks to individuals based on their skill level, task requirements, and business needs. Empower individuals to carry out assignments with appropriate levels of supervision.
  • Set software engineering project schedules, defines project parameters and tasks and monitors project tasks.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's or equivalent required.
  • Minimum of 8 years of relevant professional experience.
  • Desire to manage a team.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with all levels of the organization.
  • Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills. Ability to effectively present and discuss technical and business issues appropriate to the audience.
  • Knowledge of general management practices (e.g., performance management, client service, quality assurance, project management).
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative in translating company and department objectives into tactical and operational tasks.
  • Demonstrated ability to self-start and maintain momentum.
  • Proficient in React, JavaScript, React hooks, performance tools like lighthouse, Node, NextJS, unit and integration testing, Jest, Enzyme, Cypress
