Job Description

The Washington Post is seeking an outcomes focused Principal Product Manager to lead a cross team product initiative to attract young and diverse audiences. This person will oversee the product strategy for this organization-wide effort and influence implementation across all product teams.

In this role, you'll develop a deep understanding of media consumption, identify user problems and craft opportunities to impact our mission of becoming the premiere news source for the next generation. You'll be an integral part of setting organizational goals, defining metrics for success and facilitating collaboration.

The position is a part of a unique cross department team comprised of individuals from across technology, business, and the newsroom focused on engaging young users and driving habit formation. You'll work with analytics to identify key insights and uncover opportunity. You'll work with research to define gaps in understanding. You'll work with marketing to vet and seize partnership opportunities that bring in new audiences. And so much more! This position is remote-friendly, but Washington, D.C.-area is preferred. Candidates interested in remote working need to have a proven track record of strong communication, organization, and collaboration.

  • Define an organization wide product strategy with actionable goals for attracting and engaging young audiences
  • Analyze data, user insights, and market trends to pinpoint user pain points and outline opportunities that drive business outcomes.
  • Run product workshops to generate ideas and build buy in around initiatives that will bring meaningful impact
  • Identify key metrics to guide cross team priorities and communicate them to leadership and the broader organization
  • Lead through influence by building trust and alignment with clear, proactive communication about your plans, progress, successes, and setbacks.

Minimum Qualifications
  • 5+ years experience in media, preferably as a product owner, product manager or program manager with experience in digital media or consumer-facing digital applications that require internal tooling as part of the product
  • Ability to think critically and solve problems in a fast-paced environment while maintaining strong attention to detail
  • Experience monitoring product performance and managing troubleshooting efforts in real time.
  • Experience analyzing customer feedback, user research and performance data to set key performance indicators and guide product feature development.
  • Ability to work well across disciplines and build partnerships that result in better product outcomes
  • Exceptional communication, writing, and presentation skills that reflect the ability to communicate complex systems and concepts to editorial, sales, technical and executive teams with the appropriate terminology for stakeholders.
  • Experience using quantitative and qualitative data to identify user needs and inform solutions that guide product feature development
  • Working knowledge of industry standard software such as Microsoft Excel, Google Docs, Jira, Confluence
  • Experience collaborating with large, remote teams using communication tools such as Slack and Zoom
