Principal Market Researcher, Consumer Bank

As a Principal Market Researcher at Capital One, you will apply your strategic and research skills to major company challenges. Our Consumer Banking business is embarking on an audacious mission to grow a national bank - via compelling new products, competitive pricing, and groundbreaking market strategies. As we continue to build our national banking brand, we've committed to keeping our customers (existing and future) at the center of our strategy. Our Market Research team is critical to helping teams across the Bank understand the broader banking landscape and what drives customer behaviors and perceptions as they relate to banking.

Our Market Research team is looking for a talented Researcher to help shape our agenda for Market Research and advise on strategies across the Bank. The ideal candidate for this role is:
  • Curious: A passionate advocate for the consumer - someone who loves understanding people, their attitudes, needs, and behaviors
  • Rigorous: Grounded in market research fundamentals - understands what is required to get quality insights
  • Results-oriented: Can assess when and how to make tradeoffs between speed and quality and can drive clarity & results even in fluid, uncertain environments
  • Hands on with Data: Able to interrogate and manipulate first- and third-party data to surface learning opportunities, advance learning agendas, refine research designs, and enrich research analyses
  • Well-rounded from a disciplinary perspective: Experienced using methodologies that involve behavioral psychology, behavioral economics, neuroscience, etc. to better understand consumer decision making, especially the subconscious realm that consumers often can't articulate
  • Organized: can drive projects to completion, prioritize across multiple requests, and manage a budget
  • A storyteller: Comfortable packaging and presenting insights in a compelling way
  • Influential: Able to effectively impact the thinking of internal clients
  • A great teammate: Brings a positive attitude and is enjoyable to work with


Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

- Strategic Advising & Consulting: Become a subject matter expert of the business with the ability to navigate strategic conversations to turn business objectives into actionable research plans

- Influence : Drive decisions by developing, executing, synthesizing, and sharing actionable research with grounded business recommendations that integrate primary, secondary, customer data and competitor intelligence to promote customer-centricity and drive competitive success for Capital One in the face of shifting consumer and regulatory demands.

- Building a Network & Fostering Teamwork : Partner with a diverse team of subject matter experts from across the Bank to create results that meaningfully impact our long-term strategy.

- Project & Time Management : Manage and sequence delivery of business initiatives, build business requirements, and execute against our market research agenda. Work on multiple projects concurrently. Partner with and manage vendors as they execute research studies. Draft research reports, including developing data charts, graphs, and presentations.

- Strong Executive Communication & Storytelling Skills &: Impeccable written and oral communication credentials, coupled with strategic influencing skills and the ability to drive agreement through intellect, interpersonal and negotiation skills. Ability to effectively summarize analysis for an executive audience is essential.

- Growth Mindset: Embrace challenge, be curious, and actively seek to learn and explore new ways of working or driving insights for the business

Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree or military experience
  • At least 5 years of experience in market research or behavioral-based research executing both qualitative and quantitative methodologies
  • At least 2 year of experience in quantitative methodologies working with quantitative research vendors or statistical software
  • At least 2 years of experience in PowerPoint, Google Slides, Excel or Google Sheets


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Masters Degree in Marketing, Market Research, Statistics, Behavioral Sciences, or Consumer Psychology
  • 3+ years of experience in Marketing or New Product Development research
  • 2+ years of experience analyzing and interpreting large data sets into insights to inform business strategies
  • Experience in analysis programs: Tableau, WinCross, SPSS, R
  • Experience in research programs: Focus Vision, Qualtrics, Dynata MarketSight
