Prison Fellowship® was founded in 1976 by Charles Colson, a former aide to President Nixon who served a seven-month sentence for a Watergate-related crime. “I found myself increasingly drawn to the idea that God had put me in prison for a purpose and that I should do something for those I had left behind, ” he wrote in his best-selling memoir Born Again. Today, Prison Fellowship is the nation’s largest outreach to prisoners, former prisoners, and their families. Established on the belief that all people are created in God’s image and that no life is beyond His reach, Prison Fellowship takes a restorative approach to all those affected by crime and incarceration. We are committed to building a system and culture in which those who break the law receive appropriate discipline but also experience true rehabilitation so they can serve their communities as fully contributing neighbors, employees, parents, and spouses. We strive to make prisons safer and more rehabilitative, advance criminal justice reforms, and support former prisoners, their families, and their communities.
