Occupational Safety Technician, Environmental Health and Safety - Georgetown University Main Campus

The Georgetown University Environmental Health and Safety Department (EH&S) is comprised of highly-trained professionals who partner with faculty, students, and staff to continually promote an environmental stewardship and a safety culture. We are committed to the collective effort of developing, implementing, and administering comprehensive environmental health and safety services, policies, and procedures throughout the university community.

Under the general supervision of the Senior Environmental and Occupational Programs Manager, the Safety Technician is responsible for inspecting work areas and equipment to ensure compliance with University, DC, and federal safety policies and regulations. Responsibilities also include documenting safety inspections, identifying and citing hazardous areas/practices and recommending corrective measures, and maintaining safety equipment supply, calibration status and availability. Assists with the conduct of fire drills and simulations to help continually improve Georgetown's emergency preparedness. Conducts ergonomic investigations.

Duties include but are not limited to:
  • After training with more senior staff, inspects to identify Permit Required Confined Spaces according to definitions under the OSHA Confined Space Entry regulations.
  • Assists the Fire and Occupational Safety Specialist in conducting inspections and drills at research areas, campus residences, administrative areas, and other Georgetown University buildings.
  • Under direction of Industrial Hygienists, maintains equipment usability, and keeps abreast of calibration statuses.
  • Responds to hazardous materials spills such as oil, acid, and carries out clean-up plan as communicated by the Senior Environmental and Occupational Safety Manager.
  • Assesses work locations and advises on ergonomic improvements associated with Georgetown's ergonomics program.
  • Receiving direction from more senior staff, deliver needed equipment and supplies (up to 50 pounds in weight) to rapidly address unsafe conditions at any location on campus.


Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree, preferably in Occupational Safety or related field.
  • 1-2 years of experience in a work environment with responsibilities in occupational safety.
  • Excellent communication skills to be used with researchers, Facilities staff, and safety professionals.
  • Technical skills to understand safety equipment, monitoring, and calibrations.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Training in HAZWOPER 40-hour training is a plus.
