The Special Police Officer provides services to protect the life, well-being, and property of students, faculty, staff, visitors, dignitaries, and other through policing, patrol, event security, investigation, and emergency response. S/he is directly responsible to the Patrol Sergeant for fulfilling duties assigned performing patrol functions and specialized assignments according to all special and general orders in protection of life and property of Georgetown University. Duties that include but are not limited to:

Police Patrol
  • Performs police patrol duties while carrying baton and pepper spray.
  • Patrols on foot, in golf cart, and/or motor vehicles.
  • Responds to emergencies and enforces all United States, District of Columbia laws, and University rules and regulations.
  • Supports the university community by establishing and maintaining an environment in which all community members can go safely about their varied activities in the best interest of the university.


Reporting, Investigation, and Representation
  • Accurately and thoroughly prepares incident reports.
  • Safeguards information and evidence to ensure successful follow up and resolution.
  • Assists in preliminary investigations of incidents as necessary.
  • Supports and provides assistance to persons who have been victims of crime.
  • Attends court whenever necessary, regardless of other commitments.


Communication
  • In the absence of the Communication Officer, answers all telephone calls, responds to emergencies, burglar alarms, fire alarms, and requests for service.
  • Monitors all burglars/security alarms, cameras, and fire alarms.
  • Tracks University Police activities as dispatch.


Community Engagement
  • Conducts speaking presentations on topics identified through surveys and community feedback, under the supervision of the shift supervisors, assistant supervisor, or coordinators.
  • In furtherance of the university's higher education objectives, becomes well acquainted with members of the University community.


Requirements
  • High School diploma or certified equivalency
  • 3 years general work experience - with at least 1 year in security or a related field
  • At least 21 years of age
  • U.S. citizenship
  • Eligibility to obtain and maintain a police officer commission
  • Possession and maintenance of a valid driver's license with no violations in the last 3 years and the ability to pass the Georgetown University Driver's Certification
  • Ability to complete all required departmental training - for example, certification and arrest control tactics: Baton and OC-Based Aerosol Subject Restraint
  • Ability to successfully complete University Consortium Police Academy, usually during the probation period or possess equivalent training and certification from a civilian or military law enforcement academy
  • Knowledge of criminal and civil law and police policies and procedures
  • Availability and willingness to work extended, odd, or off hours to achieve the expectations of the department - to include rotating tours of duty (day shifts, evening shifts, overnight shifts) with fluctuating days off


The Special Police Officer position is considered as essential under the University policy guidelines and therefore subject to be on call when necessary.
