Job Details

Position is located in the Community Corrections Services Unit of the Fairfax County Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court. Interviews recently incarcerated defendants to determine their eligibility for participation in the court's Pretrial Supervision Program, Diversion First Program and appropriate bond. Conducts interviews in the jail using the Pretrial and Community Corrections (PTCC) Pretrial Defendant Questionnaire (PDQ), the Virginia Court Appointed Counsel sheet and the Virginia Pretrial Risk Assessment Instrument (VPRAI) with Praxis recommendation. Completes criminal history record checks using NCIC/VCIN, DMV and other Local court record databases. Collects data from the arresting documents and criminal history record and verifies information through a reference check with the defendant's family, friends, employers and co-workers. Reviews all data that reflect on a defendant's degree of risk of danger to themselves or the community, risk of fleeing the jurisdiction or failing to appear in court. Provides bond recommendations to the magistrates at the jail or to the judiciary in court at arraignments which can include monetary bond (higher or lower), third party custody, Pretrial supervision, personal recognizance or any combination. Identifies defendants who may need further assessment for mental health and contacts the Community Services Board (CSB) staff stationed at the jail to provide further assessment. Forwards documentation from initial interview of defendants who are directly placed into the Pretrial Supervision Program in accordance with Diversion First requirements to Pretrial Supervision Staff. All information is documented using the PTCC database. All casework services and records are maintained in accordance with local and state mandated policy.
The salary offer for the position will not exceed the mid-point of the advertised salary range. Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to develop effective working relationships with a variety of individuals.
Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in social/behavioral sciences, law enforcement, or education.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
Must have a valid driver's license.

SPECIAL NECESSARY REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, a check of the Child Protective Services Registry, and a driver's license check to the satisfaction of the employer.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor's degree in a behavioral science with one year of experience working in a judicial setting or a probation office. Excellent oral and written communication skills with a strong attention to detail. Outstanding organizational skills with the ability to prioritize work and make decisions independently with minimal supervision. Bi-lingual in English and Spanish both orally and written.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to input, access, and retrieve information from a computer. Ability to perform repetitive hand, arm, wrist and shoulder movements. Job is generally sedentary in nature, however, incumbent must be able to lift/move up to 15 pounds. Visual and auditory acuity is required to communicate with others and read data on computer monitor. Physical requirements can be performed with or without accommodations.
